Default I want to dip my toe into diesely waters

I've got a 960 Estate, 3 litre petrol. It's superb in every respect except fuel consumption. I need the estate for my work, but am thinking about getting rid of the 960, lovely though it is. Now, if I do get a diesel on my budget it'll have to be another 7 or 9 series and therefore probably a lower spec car, there not being that many good condition 760 Turbo diesels about these days. However, I digress.

What I really need are some thoughts, opinions, or facts on the diesel 7&9 engines, good bits, bad bits, what to look out for, and so on. A local non-dealership Volvo specialist has a TD940 that he's currently working on. He's said it's "high mileage" so I'm expecting 200000+ miles. I'll certainly have a look at it as my own car's over 115k, but forewarned is forearmed.

Any help greatly appreciated!

No need to avoid these cars just for high miles, providing that there is a FSH preferably with synthetic oil used.
Do a search on the forums with d24, 940 diesel and 740 diesel and you will get plenty of threads. If that's not enough Peter Milnes has written on the engine for many years.
The engine to go for is post 93 as this will have hydraulic tappets and an intercooler which boosts hp to 122. You should get mid to high thirties on fuel, roughly twice what one would do in a 960 I imagine. Basic maintenance can be done yourself further cutting costs.
As long as you are not in a hurry these are terrific cars and very relaxing to drive especially on the motorway.
You don't see that many for sale, if you do see a good 'un get it stat.
