Default MAF unit cleaning

didnt know what a maf was until yesterday when I read about them on the the fordscorpio website which is great if you have a week or so spare time to read it all , I never realised that one component could have so much written about it , I am a bit wiser but no closer to fixing the problem , there are various recommendations that the unit can be cleaned by spraying with electrical contact cleaner or carb cleaner spray . The MAF used in a Ford Scorpio may be more robust than the one used in the V70 D5 or maybe they are both made by Bosch ? Dont know if the V70 uses the foil type or twin wire ? Has anyone managed to fix or successfully clean a faulty maf ? If I know the maf has definitely failed then there is nothing to lose by ' cleaning' it with a suitable spray because if it still dosnt work I still have to pay for a new one ? Would it cause any damage to unplug the maf with the engine running to see if it makes any difference ?
