Default Power steering pumps

The Volvo woes continue.
Power steering pump has failed on my xc70. Volvo want £644 for a new one. Ridiculous price considering the car is 14 years old and only has 106,000 miles on it. I put it down to the Ford influence.

For anyone interested I share my research regarding quality aftermarket products claimed to be compatible with the OE pump. My favourite on line Volvo supplier does not sell the pumps on line as it’s a service exchange unit for them.

Volvo OE part number is 36002641
Compatible aftermarket.

ZF 8002 236
Bosch KS 01 000071
Meyle 7146310040
Febi Bilstien 181582

These aftermarket pumps are also compatible with other Volvo part numbers, for example the Bosch pump also corresponds with Volvo number 31280320. You need to do your research.

I have gone with the Meyle at a cost of £200. With no surcharge. Remains to be seen if it arrives as it was an eBay buy.
Frustratingly I found many outlets that advertised suitable pumps did not have them in stock and I got a number of messages saying they could not supply.
If you ain’t got it, why you advertising it.

There are a load of Chinese pumps on eBay that say they will fit for the £65 mark if you want to take a chance. I don’t, the original Volvo “Quality” one only lasted 106,000 miles, god knows how long a £65 Chinese one would last.

It’s not just the pump either, the air con and aux belts are contaminated with power steering fluid and will need changing. Not a huge problem for me as they were due this year anyway. However if the fluid has got onto the cam belt, that’s another outlay on top. That’s the next check.

Regards Paul.

I bought the Meyle one when I did mine. Quality seemed good and its been working fine for the last few thousand miles.

Be warned it's a HORRIBLE job to change.

You'll want to drop the AC compressor from the bottom to give you some room to work.

The hardest part is removing and re-installing the pulleys in such limited space, as you need to do so the access the mounting bolts. Additionally access to the rear mounting is also tricky and needs to be tackled from the top.

May I ask which supplier that may be?

£644 for a power steering pump is crazy! Good job on the research. I hope your new pump works fine and lasts just as long as the original.

Trade parts Volvo, or Volvo trade parts. Based in Newcastle. Got genuine Volvo belts and tensioner for reasonable price form them. Have used them for quite a few things over the years.

The pump itself from Volvo is £577 but when the vat is added it becomes £644

Regards Paul.

Volvo parts trade is part of stoneacre motor group. Effectively volvo Newcastles parts department just incase anyone wasn’t aware. I’m not to far south of there Stockton branch and when buying bits at the trade counter they were not keen on offering the eBay shop prices!

Cheers GVM... I've used them before too. I've purchased quite a few things off them over the years, like auxiliary belts and tensioners, as well as a full set of shock absorbers for my Dad's V70.

I think prices may rise though on places like Ebay and such. I heard that Ebay is charging more fees for sellers on their platform.

What engine is in your car, Paul?

Perhaps, when time and funds allow, have the original pump refurbished. Even if you never need to use it you could sell it on again here.

P.S. I have no experience nor affiliation with either companies.

Mines the 5244T14 variant made between mid 2009 and end 2010 but the aftermarket pumps I referenced fit a range of the 5244 engines across a range of models S80 S/V60 V/XC70 etc. believe they also fit a range of the 2 litre 5 cylinder engines but I was not looking for them . Think the important bit is the operating pressure, most seem to be around the 12 bar mark with the Meyle being 12.8 bar. Some sites do not put the decimal point in which mislead me somewhat. 1 bar =14.5 psi .8 of a par is a lot different from 8 bar when looking at operating pressures.

Sorry I have no idea about the 4 cylinder variants.

Regards Paul.

Yeah, it was just for reference for anyone reading this. This same pump appears to be used across both diesel and petrol 5 cylinder variants. I myself haven't been looking so completely forgot about the operating pressure rating. Good call!

Yeh, that’s how I felt when Volvo said £577+ vat.

I mean, how do they justify the prices. We all know they don’t make them, they buy them in. Auto doc was quoting between £192 and £320 depending on make , some had a surcharge which was not in the quoted price so you had the option of sending the old one back or paying a price which included the surcharge and keeping the old one.
These are reputable names, Bosch, Meyle, Febi Bilstien, OE suppliers as well as makes I had not heard of. None were £577+ vat.

We established that the volvo aux belt tensioner is a Dayco unit, the belt probably as it was made in Italy. The air con stretch belt says made in Germany and is I suspect Meyle as the Meyle belt on Auto Doc says original quality on the listing. When you added the p&p to the price there was only £5 difference between that and the genuine volvo I bought on eBay.

We all got to make a living and to do that we need to make a profit. But there’s making a profit and bending the customer over, which is what Volvo are doing these days.

Regards Paul.
