M66 oil change
Follow-up from other thread...
Finally did my gearbox oil change, no fill-plug, fill through reversing light switch, which is easily accessible on the front, not at the back behind the gear lever, which most people seem to have. All in all, a much easier job than what seems to be the case for the majority with the other 'version' of the M66. Few questions/comments. - Old oil, after 71000 miles, was very dark. Don't understand why Volvo says it doesn't need changing. - To not contaminate my measure jug, I filled it up with the 1.9L oil first, then measured how much had come out. Only 1.4L! Now, it's over-filled by 0.5L, is that so bad that I have to drain some out again? - It was on some shallow ramps during the procedure, but the drain plug still looked like the lowest point. What could cause only 1.4L to drain? Thanks

I'm surprised you only got 1.4 l out, I had 2.2 out of mine but mine is older and has a fill plug. I know the book says 1.9 litres, mine took 2.2 to run out the fill hole so I'm happy to leave it. Done 12k since I changed it and no signs of leaks.
The gearbox is vented, or should be so any over preasure should chuck the excess out the breather I would think. Did the 1.9 l fill the box to a level where you could see it or was it a measured amount only? Going on the information you have not overfilled it. My oil was appreciably darker at 40k than the new oil. Paul. |

Hi,
There's no way to see the level in the box. I've drained 0.2L out, I'll do it again next month anyway, and will try to do it with hotter oil and on a level surface. Thanks

Just for future reference, as I'm changing oil again, the reason for 1.4L is listed on Volvo's page here:
https://www.volvocars.com/lb/support...ade-and-volume The engine is a D4204T5 as per note. Haynes doesn't seem to include this variant. Regards, Henrik Morsing

M66 and you dont have 2 plugs for oil change? Up and down? 24mm socket
I had more than 2L.in gearbox, but I refill ca 1.9L. Much smoother change. Also that old oil is still good. I know color said diffrent but one guy from forum send for some oil analysis and it was still good |

Henrik, Beer.
Insert GIF here, Gareth, stop it! There should be a 24mm fill plug. It's normally close to the subframe. A ring spanner is required to access. Socket won't reach. I learned the hard way, you were probably on borderline failure of bearings. My m66awd failed a few months ago, due to a leak on the output shaft, Dropping the levels to bearly a litre. Oil was a bit dark on mine, but then again it had 176k on it with no record of being changed, and it had glittery bits in, £2600 later, its back to a lovely box now. The motor factors were telling me it should be 0.75 litre, arguments ensued, I left with 3 litres. I filled "To spill" at just under 2 litres. Then it went for repair... I intend renewing this fluid for genuine volvo stuff. Don't know if the AWD bit means it needs more... I am surprised that there is no fill plug. I take it the stuff you poured in was clear volvo stuff? Nice to see big red still surviving. |

Gareth, stop it!
The point of my update was why it was 1.45L, not 1.9L. And just to clarify, this is a D4204T5 engine so: 1) Easy access with both spanners and sockets. Even my big torque wrench goes in there. 2) No level/fill plug 3) Re-fill through reversing light switch, which I was ridiculed for in another post, but that is Volvo's official procedure.

I see why they would give an exact amount to fill it if you didn't have a fill plug. But no fill plug, Madness! |
