Dealer has just phoned me. It was not the EGR but the oxygen sensor. Something about when the EGR was changed previously soot can get on the oxygen sensor tricking it into thinking there is a fault. I may have got that slightly wrong but it was definitely a sensor issue rather than EGR. Some good news then.

Mr first service at 19k yesterday (purchased new in March). No issues reported (EGR related or otherwise). I have never seen the tortoise or any other warning lights.
I had a brand new (15 miles on clock) S60 D4 as a courtesy car - throttle response and acceleration seemed a bit more spritely then mine. I have noticed more recently that performance in mine does seem to vary quite considerably from trip to trip. Sometimes I put my foot down and it takes off and then other times it feels like the engine is being strangled. Is this what you have been suffering with Arianne? |

Quite possibly - most of my miles are in 6th gear with the cruise set to 72!

Which bit of motorway do you drive on where you can set cruise to 72 and let it run? I use it in contraflows, most others do as cars seems to all move together through them going dead on 50mph, but I can barely think of a stretch of motorway that is clear enough for 72. The M6 through the Lake District is the only one in the north of England that springs to mind.
Maybe you should tell us all as then others will want to use it as well.

I find that with sufficient hazard perception and forward planning most sections of even moderately busy dual carriageway and motorway are suitable for cruise control . I holidayed in the borders last week (unbelievable weather) and on Saturday drove back along the A1/A14 all the way to Suffolk. Apart from the road works around Newcastle and Scotch Corner I was cruise 72 all the way apart from the odd HGV overtaking. Now I am used to it, I could not and would not drive any other way. I don't have to worry about cameras or plod and it seems to help with fuel economy too.

I did a long run down to Cornwall on Saturday. Also set to 72mph (which = 70mph on the Garmin). Not too much traffic, but the active cruise worked well (manual box).

The EGR only works at slow rpm, so probably not being used very much if the car is on the motorway a lot.

No action required by VW owners unless they want to get updated software, guess as wimorrison said it will soon be forgotten about.
