Default XC90 extended warranty

Hi all, I have a MY17 XC90 Inscription.

At the end of the three years, I went of a 2 year extended warranty. Now this extended warranty is coming to an end. Got an email from Volvo Warranty team with a quote of one year further extension for £607.

I am tempted to extend, but not sure if its too expensive a quote for a one year extension.

Also, are there other good warranty provider for a cheaper price, that I should look into?

I have to admit my XC90 has been trouble free, and I only ever had to go to dealer for annual service.

All thoughts welcome. Thanks

Depends on what the warranty covers. My (albeit not personal) experience is these warranty companies try and wriggle out of any claim.

Personlly I'd keep the £600 to use as a war chest in the event anything goes bang.

There will be cheaper options available but it's important to compare levels of cover in detail as well as exclusions, which all insurance-based warranties have, so that you are comparing 'like with like'.

The Volvo Extended Warranty (actually a Volvo-branded insurance policy provided by Car Care Plan) is fairly comprehensive, and for £50-ish per month on a 5 year old car, I would be minded to take it.

I was in a similar position a year ago and decided to go for what I thought was a good after market warranty, when my XC90 broke a valve spring Volvo would only fit a replacement cylinder head at a cost of £5500 needless to say the warranty company wasn’t interested insisting the cylinder head hadn’t fail and would only cover the cost of the value spring and labour to replace (max 9.4hour)!
After 7weeks I finally got my car back at great expense to myself, lesson learnt and I will never bother with an aftermarket warranty ever again.
Oh by the way don’t expect Volvo to contribute towards any repair costs once the car gets to 5 years old even if you have been a loyal customer for 20 year.

Car Care plan have been with volvo since the 1970's and are very sensible when assessing a claim . any job these days is going to be over £1000. we talk in thousands now instead of hundreds like 10 years ago .

Thanks for all the inputs guys. I've decided to bite the bullet and got for the extension.

If it's any consolation - I have just done the same. Mine is £100 cheaper on the V90 but lets face it the bill is going to have 3 zero's at the end as a minimum should anything go wrong! You'd hope that the Volvo 'branded' product reduces the wiggle room too...

Be mindful that as far as I am aware (what I was told when I took the extended warranty on my MY17 car), the Volvo policy does not cover hoses. Unfortunately if you are going to suffer any problem, there is a good chance it will be a PP hose failure. The cynic in me wonders if this is specifically because of all the PP hose issues, though I suppose they are not going to tailor warranties to every problem...

Last June my XC90 D5 was 3.5 years old and suffered a PP hose failure while we were away on holiday in Poole. The local main dealer (Volvo Poole) were super helpful and arranged fitting of a new PP hose that same day (a Friday too). I had no extended warranty but the arranged with Volvo a good-will gesture (2nd XC90 admittedly and full Volvo SH on both) but I was amazed and relieved the goodwill gesture was 100% from Volvo. They said it is a known issue and tech said replacement part had now been redesigned. This is one of the reasons I ordered my 3rd XC90 which will be here in 2-3 weeks time now, not only reason though, i like driving it, is very comfortable, tows 2000kg caravan extremely well but I think XC90’s just look ‘right’ from every angle.

You are correct about hoses not being covered by the Volvo extended warranty, but with at least one exception. As it's a well known problem, PP hoses are subject to a goodwill payment from Volvo if your dealer can be bothered. My dealer got a 95% contribution for me, net cost to me about £15.

BTW the latest PP hoses are sound, although it took several goes.

I have reported this on the forum before but as I moved and spread 1 tonne of limestone gravel today I really can't be bothered to find it!
