Tyres
My S60 (Jan '02) was fitted with Continental tyres, it's an SE so has the 17" alloys, and there are a couple of observations which I wonder if anyone else can verify.
From new the car would 'pull' sharply when driven through standing water at normal road speeds. When the fronts were replaced with Michelens the straight line / standing water performance was transformed markedly (as good if not better than my previos Audi A4 Avant / Michelen combination). The rears are still the originals (32.5K mls) but seem to make a great deal of noise. At first I thought it might be a wheel bearing, but the volume and pitch of sound is dependant upon both speed and road surface. It's got to the stage where on some surfaces the radio needs to be louder than it really *should* be to mask the humming from the back! And, a relative asked if there was something wrong with the car on a short journey the other day! My local dealer hasn't heard the noise yet, but hasn't had any complaints from other owners, expect that the fronts need replacing frequently. Anyone else got any comments?

RE: Tyres
I would imagine that your tyres, like mine, are Michelin Pilot Sports - mine are the 215/45 17s you have to have on the 850R.
When changing from the dealer-supplied Kumhos, the Pilots were much quieter and gave a better ride. They also have provided excellent wet and dry grip under fairly enthusiastic conditions including a track day (albeit with a ##### driver - me - behind the wheel!) The only problem is cost - Pilots are seriously costly - but then as far as I'm concerned, it's cheaper to get grippy tyres than explain to an insurer why it was someone else's fault that you shot off the road on a wet corner... |

RE: Tyres
My S60 uses 225/45 R17s, and yes the Michelins are Pilot Sport, quiet and sticky!
The Continentals are ContiSportContact and driving me nuts!

RE: Tyres
Recently replaced the Continentals with Michelin Pilot Sports on the front of my T5.
I have not noticed them being significantly quieter or louder than the Continentals, but I only have 14,000 miles (on the back Continentals) on them so far. They are way better in standing water and, in my opinion, the car seems to track straighter too - much less susceptible to side winds. Don't know if it's the tyres but that's the only thing I've changed. <<Edited to clarify which tyres the 14K related to>> |

RE: Tyres
You might not notice the drumming/humming noise for a while yet, mine only started at about 22-24K (they're now on 34K and still going strong...).
One thing I did notice with the Continental tread pattern is that some of the cuts (I think they're called sipes) are not as deep as others which means at a certain wear point the tread pattern changes. I think this is probably the cause of the extra road noise. If this happens at about 24K, 2 years average motoring, then I wonder if it's a 'ploy' to get the owner to change tyres on a regular basis?
