Can I use this cracked distributor cap?

I've been given a Bosch distributor cap which looks to be virtually unused. Its part no. 1235522 382, which looks to be the correct part no my volvo 740 with a B200E engine. It's been stored in a garage for some time, so it has a bit of surface rust on the spindle etc. but that is not a problem, it will be pretty easy to clean up. The rest seems to be almost new with no pitting or dirt on it, apart from some light old marks on one side where it connects with the distributor body. I know nothing of its history. The only problem would appear to be a crack in the cover next to one of the bolt holes. The crack is clean, and only on the outer part, the inner is intact. I've taken a photo which can be viewed on my save old cars site - cracked 740 distributor cap image . I apologise for the size of this image. Do you guys think I can use this distributor?
I'm thinking of pushing an insulating glue into the crack, and I hope this will avoid any tracking. Have you got any idea as to why this should have cracked, my only guess is that it was over tightened.

Thanks - would you use some adhesive to keep the crack clean?

Yes I would fill the crack with some 2 part epoxy glue which sets hard. Araldite for example.

Clean the crack as best you can:~
J.B. Weld is ideal for this sort of repair, press/force the mix into the opening and mask off to prevent it slumping too much.
(A rough/keyed surface is better for this)

Sand back the surplus as required.

There's a fabulous 2 pack finger mix putty called Milliput https://www.milliput.com/ originally recommended to me by 'Laird Scooby' some years ago now.

It would be ideal for this if you wanted to fill the crack. I have used it on many other things with 100% satisfaction.

I’m not sure I’d even bother to repair that. It’s not going to affect the functionality of the cap and the screw hole still looks fairly robust. If I was going to fix it I think I would use a small amount of Araldite and try to clamp the crack closed while it set fully over a couple of days.
