Default ECU for C30 - price?

Hi. Please don't get too technical as I'm not a petrolhead.
The cambelt went on my c30 but was resolved and engine running well. However I have been told (by two different garages) there is an ECU issue and I need a new one. They are quoting me £1800 which I would hope includes fitting. Is this remotely reasonable? I have also been told there is a small risk it will not work, in which case it will be £1800 straight down the drain. The car will then need an MOT.

I had already spent £600 resolving the original problem.

I am in a financial corner which means that at the present time I would struggle to buy a new car anything other than total rubbish. I could not spend over £2000.

Thoughts, wisdom etc please. And thank you.

£1800 is an extortionate amount for an ECU but is about right if you're paying a main dealer to do it.

You're better off finding a garage with facilities to read and program ECU's (usually somewhere that can do custom remaps) who can copy your current software over to a second hand unit.

They should be able to do this for significantly less (hundreds not thousands!).

EDIT: What problems are you having with the car that make these places think your ECU is at fault?

£1800?????

That's the cost of an new EMS ECU for a Scania truck at a Scania dealer

Seems really steep to me.

If it's been diagnosed as needing replacement I cannot understand this ''slight risk'' it may not work line

What issues are you having now?

That seems like a lot when ECU testing will test & rebuild for less than £300, Inc a lifetime warranty... https://www.ecutesting.com/product-c...ne-management/

Why if its running fine? Sounds like cobblers to me. Mind you the same can be said of a volvo "running fine" these days. They were designed to fail, frequently, so we can queue at dealerships for phoney repairs.

Thanks all.

I should have explained also that although the engine is "running well" diesel cannot be put direct into the fuel tank, it has to be put in... elsewhere (sorry, limited understanding )

The garage that has it is attached to an ex Volvo dealership. The mechanics are Volvo trained and have the relevant diagnostic gear. The repair shop is notorious for high pricing, but I thought they would have the best chance of getting it running. I previously had it with another garage - but they kept it for over 6 months before finally diagnosing (but for some reason not dealing with) the ECU issue.

How do i find a repair shop that's going to tackle this for a reasonable price?

You need to get a proper diagnostic and understanding of what your problem is before going somewhere else and asking them to fix it.

I don't get what the problem is, or by what you describe, how the ECU can be at fault or causing this?

Both of those sound utter BS
"cant put fuel in the tank,, have to put it elsewhere" = Leave that "garage" as fast as possible and go Somewhere else
as for the 6months and not fixed "garage" = good call leaving that shower of "!"

Yeh thats about the price of a new ecu, what you want to do is get that part number and look it up on ebay for some second hand ecu's and get that at a fraction of the price.

I am on my 3rd ecu at the moment (Not the fault of the ECU off ebay so dont worry) all costed around £60

I would probably find a ecu specialist garage as well, someone that has the capability to diagnose / clone onto a second ECU to sort your issue out.

You didnt mention why they thought you had an ECU issue? my garage knew mine had an ECU issue when the car was still running fine but they couldnt connect to the ECU to get anymore mapping work done.

Dont do anything ANYWHERE or spend ANY money till you have someone fit and proper check it over. maybe ask here if there is a DIY Vida guy local to you who can give an opinion?
