Purchasing high mileage T5
Hi...I am in the throws of looking for a second hand V70 T5/T5 R and have recently spotted some ex-police high mileage T5's. Has anyone anything to say about the T5 with plenty of miles on the clock...for example things to check/watch out for...Any advice would be much appreciated...
Thanks...Jase |

RE: Purchasing high mileage T5
Wezzar,
Try and look through previous records on this one. It's a debatable subject. 1 - People who paid dealer prices say the ex-cop ones are ropey and full of problems. 2 - people who drive the ex-cop ones say they got value for money and found no real problems execpt for the dash board holes etc etc.. I used to have one and paid 6250 for a mint S70. I sold it with 120k miles on the clock and it's still going strongly. Eh. Dave I'd buy another one... Cheers Gareth |

Always make sure that parts and cars come direct from the police or someone who buys from the police.
The ropey cars that people dont want end up in the auctions. The good car dealers have people on the inside. good luck Gareth |

RE: Purchasing high mileage T5
If you regard a police car as a company or rental car, you'll have an idea how it's looked after - serviced on the button, but driven by people who will not be paying for the damage they do to it.
So as always, some will be shagged, some will be fine. The only downside is that police cars will say so on the V5 which will put off a lot of potential owners, so that's something to consider for selling the car on. Most specialist ex-cop dealers will get decent ones or they'd go out of business; they'll usually also get rid of the nastier legacies of cop ownership like huge holes and lots of sticky on the bodywork. The other option is to go to a local large company's fleet manager and offer cash and no hassle purchase on any fleet Volvos he will have in the future. That's how the trade do it. |

I didnt even have to "sell" my car someone came to me and asked if i wanted to sell it.
Eh Dave.... People who purchased from dealers will always be against ex-cop ones. Why pay 10k for a s70 when for 6k you can get a car with 20k miles more and 350 quids worth of dashboard repair. Cheers |

RE: Purchasing high mileage T5
Must admit with friends in the trade I'd buy as cheap as possible (whilst still checking that it's okay). One thing I wouls always say if buying a hih miler is get it checked by a Volvo mechanic, when testing it make sure that there are no stange noises or smoke and basically use your sense.
The omega my dad got earlier this year has 100+miles, is a 98 or 99 model and he picked it up for 50% list price. So far the only problems have been the idle step motor (120 quid) and the prop is worn, but not badly) and a drunken ****** who ploughed into the side (but has been repaired by the unsurance company!) Only problem I have buying cheap in the UK is the wheel would be in the wrong side of the car for where I live, damn! Chat later Stu |

RE: Purchasing high mileage T5
I own an 850 T5 which is fast approaching 205k miles. It's not ex-police but one company owner from new. It's needed new disks and pads on the front, new tyres, the air-con recharging and the drivers heated seat doesn't work. This is mainly standard wear and tear, and I'm very happy with the amount of car I bought for the money. Quite a few people on here told me I couldn't get anything that wasn't crashed or had a hidden history etc for under £6000 if I wanted a T5. Well my car has proved them all wrong. It's not perfect and I think the turbo may be starting to wear but I can get 35mpg all day on the motorway.
Just go for it, but check carefully before you buy. Dave |

Just to add to my last comment. My car passed it's MOT today with the only problem being my headlights were pointing too low. Not bad for 205k miles!!

My 850T5 est has now got 170K on the clock and came out of service with a mere 140K. Yes its not perfect but about the price of a civvy car. Go in with your eyes wide open and you can save a packet. Before the volvo I had a Vauxhall Omega MV6,before that a Rover 827 and before that Vauxhall Senator 24V all ex plod, loved them all!! |
