Default '00 v70 speedometer

Evening all

It looks like my 850 could be on its last legs and I'm considering replacing it. I've just looked at a 2000 v70 tdi which looks pretty good, but the main issue is that its speedometer does not function correctly. The odometer and cruise control works fine but the speedometer reads incorrectly.

As an example, when we set off it quickly rose to about 30mph even though we we going slowly. A we picked up speed rose to 50 but then not much further.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what could be done to fix this, or whether is is likely to be a tricky (expensive) repair?

Cheers,

Bill

Ps. It looks like there are instrument clusters available on eBay, so I could replace the whole unit. I'm not sure how the mileage is accounted then?

I don't think the DIMs are swappable - AFAIK they will need programming to the car & that can only be done by a dealer.

I've never heard of this problem on a Volvo - back in the day of speedo cables I might have said it was this but that doesn't apply to these cars. I would suggest that the problem doesn't necessarily lie with the DIM rather elsewhere.

Might be an expensive fix, might not I'm sure an expert will be along soon so it could be a very good bargaining tool if it's an easy fix or on the other hand walk away - there's lots of cars out there.

Thinking laterally, if you like the car and can live with the problem, a satnav would give you an accurate speed readout the only drawback is that there is a slight delay in the speed reading. A cycle computer could also do the job using a magnetic pick-up on one of the wheels.

Ph1 or Ph2 V70? If a Ph1 I have a set of clocks from a 2.5 petrol you could have for the cost of postage, you could probably strip and make 1 good one from the 2

Yes but an MOT failure?

Thanks for your thoughts.

The car is in great condition apart from this, but it would be an annoying fault to have and I don't really want to end up with an expensive repair if it's not something that I can't do myself. The current owner uses a satnav, but that's not ideal.

It's a 2000 model which I think is on the cusp of PH1 and 2 so I'm not 100% sure which it is. It's still the TDi rather than the D5 if that helps??

Whilst there are still some of these TDis out there, their numbers are getting fewer, particularly if you want a decent one. At present I have this one on my radar which is an hour away from me, and another in Scotland (I'm based in Aldershot)... Not sure whether I'm daft enough to travel 500 miles each way though... Isn't there a song about that??

Bill

I've never seen them test the speedo in an MOT. It is part of the test but I've never seen it tested

Bill, When you open the bonnet does the grill go up with the bonnet (phase 1) or stay where it is (phase 2) - Plenty of other ways to tell them apart but this is probably the easiest - Mike

I'm sure I read this could be a DIM issue on another thread, although I guess it could equally be a faulty sender/sensor if there are no other issues with the DIM

You can replace the DIM, I did it on mine, however it needs to be the same part number and software version, so may take a while to find one that works

I'd look at the sender - TBH I can't talk with any authority regarding the Volvo set-up but somewhere there will be a sender. Gone are they days of mechanical worm drives - it's either going to be a magnetic pick-up or a sender mated to the gearbox: hopefully someone who knows what the arrangement is can advise.
