Default Goodnight from me ......

The time has come to say goodbye.

My ‘17 XC60 is being taken away tomorrow after 3 1/2 years and 39k from new.

Overall I’ve enjoyed the car, but there have also been a few minor niggles that never really got resolved:

1) Excessive wind noise from drivers door mirror. I gave up after 4 dealer visits
2) Occasional hiccup on light throttle settings in hot weather. It’s a 2.4 manual and seems a common issue.

I also seemed jinxed with bloomin DPF regens starting at the end of a shortish journey, won’t be sorry to see the end of that.

I’m going electric. I’ve essentially retired and my mileage has plummeted since lockdown. I also have quite a sizeable solar PV system so am hoping to get much of my driving essentially FOC.

Would I have another XC, yes, but an auto.

All the best - Rob

An EV sounds like a good fit in that situation. Go on, put us all out of misery, is a Polestar??

Intrigued by your comment on regens. I've only had my V60 D4 for a few months and due to the continued lockdown I'm still WFH and most journeys at the moment are short.
Slightly concerned about the impact this could be having on the DPF but I've never noticed any sign of a regen despite having covered about 2k miles.
What should I be looking for? Previous cars have been petrol so this DPF malarkey is all new to me.

We just got rid of our second car, a BMW i3 (REX). We got rid when it became 3 years of age and the warranty expired. Eye watering cost to extend the warranty. With us both having retired we were unsure if we would be able to afford such out goings in future years to have a little bit of peace of mind. The dealerships don't mention such future costs when they sell those cars. The EV's are great around town, but the infrastructure isn't right yet for them if you need to travel. We keep the XC60 D5 manual for any decent run and now use a 1.0 IQ for round town and day to day running.
Good luck and safe driving. The range of an EV improves as the weather gets warmer!

Hi,

We are getting an MG ZS EV exclusive. Chinese made, very well specced, superb build quality & with a 7 year warranty to boot. Not the biggest of batteries in the world @ 44kWH, but has a usable range of 160 miles. Enough for running around locally and will get to either sons place on a full charge - we usually stay over and can recharge there.

First choice was a Tesla, but they were just too expensive. The MG comes in at half the cost of the Tesla due to Tesla not discounting, MG discounting and a bit of luck in finding a pre-reg one which moved another couple of grand in the right direction.

A petrol Mondeo Mk4 estate is the other car in the household, so all bases covered methinks.

Cheers- Rob

Nice looking car, but a big let down in terms of range. The model 3 standard goes further with a smaller battery.

Polestar / Volvo / Geeley need to get hold of a Kia E-niro and try to figure out what they have done to achieve class leading range. I expected better from the CMA platform which was supposedly designed with electrification in mind. Can't see them selling many XC40 recharge BEVs with worse range then the P*2 and a daft starting price.

Is that warranty on the whole car or the battery? If it's on everything, then its not to be sneezed at.
I forgot to mention, if you choose to have a home charging unit fitted, I hope the supply cable to it from your home consumer unit can cope. We had to change the cable supplying our garage, so that was another grand when it was all finished. We could have just used the supplied 3 pin plug and charge it from a normal home socket, but it would take 10 hours to give a full charge. Then there is the cable to connect the car to the charging point. There are lots of 'hidden' optional extra's which are really necessities to enable normal use of the car.
Hope you have you got an Economy 7 meter at your home so you can charge it at a much cheaper rate!
I have heard that Tesla extended warranties are even more expensive.

I for one would be really interested in how you find the MG - I've been wanting an electric main car for ages, but nothing else comes close to the V60 PHEV we've currently got that doesn't cost the earth, but has fast enough charging to make up for a smaller battery. I've test driven the "excite" version at Louth, and although I enjoyed it, they only had a petrol exclusive, which did feel very nice to sit in and made sure that I wouldn't be happy without that version of the EV. I'm really worried that the quality of the Volvo would be missed, but now thanks to your generosity, you can be the guinea pig !!

I get Tesla have a head start on them as they've been at it over 10 years already, but they will catch up.

On the plus side, the Polestar 2 is a far better made machine than the Tesla which still suffers badly from quality issues even though they've been making them a while.
