1971 1800E - steering problems
Hello. I'm a newbie to this forum, although I've owned my 1800E for 27 years. Unfortunately I have neglected it badly. It was a driver for many years, but for the last 13 years it has been off the road. I now have the time to rebuild it. The main mechanical problem is loose steering (there is about 2 inches of play in the steering wheel). I think I've traced the problem to the steering column. There is a connection below the coupling for the two parts of the collapsible steering column. The top part of the column turns, but does not immediately connect with the lower part, giving the play. I hope I'm describing this clearly because I have no idea what to do about the problem. These do not seem to be replaceable parts. The steering box also leaks oil badly, but I think that is just the lower seal.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Scott |
