Default Transfer / GearboxDisaster time

I have been suffering an annoying on grrumbling noise under acceleration and decided that, as the release bearing can be a bit of a known weakness I got a new clutch and slave cylinder and got the garage too change it.........

They removed the gearbox with out too much trouble and then, as part of the deal they had a look at the transfer box and it's associated gubbins. Oh dear is the next bit.... It may need a new transfer box (which MattXC may be able to supply) but that is not the bad news.... it transpires the connecting pipe/bearing (I can't remember the proper name) has seized into the Gearbox so I am stumped unless anybody knows where I can source a gearbox or the garage manage to perform a miracle tomorrow - I knew there might be a big bill coming but this will be off the scale......

Your volvo dealer has a hydraulic press tool for removing this Sleeve .... I guess your garage isnt an authourised repairer ?

Hopefully they will pull it off if you take the gearbox to them ...

Hi Ian - Yes, I can help out with the box - Colin is picking it up this morning. I did wonder if it was your car when he phoned me yesterday. Just as well he phoned me - these things are hard to get hold of secondhand (believe me, I know!).

Mine turned out to be the splined drive sleeve that had stripped and not the box itself, hence why I still have my 'spare' one. Volvo seem to keep a ready supply of them, so it's obviously a common problem.

Remember and make sure the front tyres are the ones with slightly more tread on them, or you'll be needing another box again sooner than you'd like.

Can you describe the symptoms of the problem you were having? I'd be interested to compare it to the way mine was.

Hope the bill isn't too painfull.

Cheers, Matt

Ian - sorry, you mentioned you might need a gearbox too (although hopefully not). Try Greens of Skipton, Morgan Autosalvage and jgt-volvo-cars (eBay) as they're all breaking XC's. Morgan was offering the gearbox on eBay recently. U-Pull-It in Inverkeithing also had an 850 AWD in very recently, so they'd be worth a try - particularly because they're local.

Matt - thanks for you help - the good news is they managed to get the sleeve out - they had to open the gearbox to do it - I forgot to check if the transfer box is still required although I know I need a new sleeve too. I forgot to ask Colin when I saw him but the flywheel is a dual mass jobby and that may need replaced as well GULP!! ....we shall see what price they come back with..... should I do it now, as the new clutch is going in, or should I wait - could be false economy not to change it...!!! but the car should be ok for another 10 years if i get all that done....

Hi Ian - it's probably going to cost a fortune anyway now, so I'd do anything else it needs while they have the box out.

Tarduff are very good - I've know them for years and all my cars have gone to them. I even worked there (a long, long, long time ago and helped Roy when he raced Formula Fords back in the 70's/80's).

Let me know how you get on.

Matt
ps - what's the mileage on your car?

Hi Matt,

Tarduff are good - all my cars since 1995 have gone there too - my next door neighbours son used to help out there - and he has done race engineering stuff for A1GP and BTCC teams (AON again this year)..... for the mileage is 92k but I think it was a company vehicle early on but it was serviced.....

The symptoms were about a year ago I noticed that on right lock, under acceleration, I would get a metal rubbing on metal type noise. Gradually it got worse but, sods law, whenever I took the car in I could not reproduce it..... then it started to show up with left and right lock but ok in a straight line - but it would not do it on demand - then it started in traffic hold ups - like whenever it got warm and the engine was under acceleration - not even hard accelleration so in the end I consulted here and decided to get the clutch replaced.... now it looks like the final bill will be around £1500...gulp!!!
