Wiper Arm or Wiper Blade Upgrade
My windshield wiper blades flop around and as a result don't clear the window very well. I believe it's due to the sloppy connection between the wiper arm and the wiper blade.
The connection doesn't seem to be very well designed. I'm wondering if anyone has done any modifications to make the connection tighter or if there are any wiper arms that are compatible and work better. Thank you for your input. |

Does tweaking the arm to put more pressure on the blade work ?

I have looked at SW-EM website. Lots of really good information there, but none of it seem to pertain to my issue.
These are the wiper blades I purchased. Where the j-hook part of the wiper arm connects to the wiper blade is where all the slop is. Tweaking the arm to put more pressure on the blade doesn't really help. The blade just flops one way or the other depending on which way they are moving. |

These work very well (compared with the old ones!):

I have an idea and wondering if anybody has attempted anything similar. The majority of the "flop" is between the arm and the wiper blade. I'm considering replacing the portion of the original Volvo arms with a J-hook style that would hopefully provide a better connection.
Has anyone done this before and/or have any recommendations for wiper arms that might be easily modified to fit the Volvo? A little sweep might be okay. I'm sure it will take some trial and error but it seems like it's doable. Unfortunately my 122 was/is a little far gone to do a period correct restoration. Definitely leaning more towards function over form. |

As long as the arm length is correct and they fit on the splines properly you just need to match the blades to the fitment ends. They will almost certainly be an all black set but if you are happy with that make the change.
The arms don't have to be the spoon type. There are straight ones with a small locking pip. The scoop type blades get sloppy due to the spring getting weak. New ones do have some movement but that seems to help the blades flop back and forth. Amazon wipers can only be described as adequate and not up to modern standards. Blades are 11" (Fiat 500 280mm) but I don't know the arm length off hand. Trico used to do an arm that you could slide the straight part into the mount to set the length. Morris Minor are 11" blades. If looking at alternate arms, make sure the blade end has the bend in the right direction for the Amazon. Park left/bend left when viewed from the front. Derek, Thank you for the info. Unfortunately some of Moris Minor and Fiat parts are tough to find here in the US.
Agree that Amazon wipers can only be described as adequate and not up to modern standards. They wipe but not very well. I defiantly consider it a safety issue especially driving in the snow. I will keep everyone posted on this project. |

Being in the USA I expected that comment! Maybe check with Mike Dudek at iRoll to see what he has. Super clean your windscreen. Do a really good job and perhaps try Rain X or similar with the new blades?
