Cutting wires and re-routing may well be the simplest solution. Often an add on 'clever' box can provide a solution.

If you do 'divert' the current to the dipped headlights you may have to match the current that they draw or the car will start giving you bulb failure warnings.

I think software programming would be near impossible. I know a few people who have edited the main programme in order to overwrite certain parts to add functions, its a minefield. You can introduce new instructions to the CAN-Bus rather than changing the programming, however with things like switch monitoring, the car repeats that switch state instructions at regular intervals, therefore if you'd have to suppress transmission of the data from the source or end up with flashing lights, it turns them on, you turn them off :-)

I look forward to hearing how your project develops.

First of all what year of car are we talking about as there are subtle differences.

If it is a 2008+ you can have a software update done and exchange current fog lights (if fitted) for LED DRLs. Maybe this would suite what your after?

You can also have the option of turning DRLs off and wire in a set of Halo rings wired up to side lights to act as DRLs or but you've got to remember to turn side lights off when you leave the vehicle as there is no buzzer fitted and if left on the side lights will stay on until the battery is flat.

thanks for the thumbs up!
I definitely won't start CAN-bus programming however as I have my hands full already

I sounds sweet but the car is on a 07 plate...

Yes, this is an option but it's not preferred as I want to retain the original functions on the switch. It's really convenient to have it in 0 position and it's switched off when you stop the engine

I'd say it would be nice to get the dealer sw off and then do the halo conversion however not to the "sidelights position" on the switch as you suggested but to an ignition switched power source!

Actually this last one seems the easiest solution.
Unless somebody will reply that "you can't do that as the CAN bus is watching all bla-bla-bla"

I have pretty much found a decent solution to the problem although some small issues need to be solved.

One of them is the "usage" of the daylight sensor...
Can I use that to "switch" things on and off or will the canbus laugh into my face?

Turn drl option off in cem, then add halo ring drls (white and amber leds), with a control box. + wire to ignition live, - wire to battery ground, and 3rd and 4th wires to indicators +
