Default D2, D3, D4 Engines

Okay, so I have a V60 DRIVe, the D2 engine. I was playing around on the build your own V60 section on the Volvo website when I noticed something that I have never noticed before. The emissions and mpg for the D2, D3 and D4 are exactly the same. First of all, how do they do that? I thought they needed a small engine to get those mpg returns.

Secondly, why am I tootling around in a 1.6d 115bhp when I could be driving a 2.0d 163bhp engine? I know there is a price difference between the three engines, not that huge, but when you see the emissions and mpg of the 3 types are the same I am feeling a little silly.

I actually think the D2 is a very good engine but hey, we all like a bit of power. I thought I was sacrificing power in order to get better mpg, and was prepared to accept that, but it seems as though I did not need to. Have Volvo improved the mpg on the D3 and D4 engine or have they been like this for a while?

Only MY2013 have they been this close however it will not be for long, as the updated facelift will see the D2 drop further about another 6 g/km I think if memory serves. You have to also remember that the D3/D4 are literally the same.

What you really need to look at is the D5 as it is only 120 g/km...

I know the mpg figures for all engines are not accurate but even allowing for a real life reduction the D3 and especially D4 are still impressive. I am amazed at the lack of difference between the engines in mpg and emissions. The D5 looks splendid but it does take you into a whole different price bracket whereas the D2,3 and 4 are relatively close together.

6(!) g a km? Erm... That would result in a fuel consumption of like 2000 mpg or so!

The D2 is supposed to be around 99 g/km

No as in the facelift being lowered by around 6 g/km.

The fuel consumption of the 115 hp, four-cylinder D2 diesel in the new Volvo S60 with a manual gearbox has been improved to a class-leading 70.6mpg (EU Combined, preliminary figures), translating into CO2 emissions of only 106 g/km. The corresponding figures with the automatic gearbox are 68.9mpg and 107 g/km (preliminary figures).

Its estate cousin, the new Volvo V60 D2, also has class-leading fuel consumption at 68.9mpg (109 g/km) with the manual and 67.3mpg (110 g/km) with the automatic gearbox (preliminary figures).
The D2 in the V40 is 99 on 225's, and 97 on 205's...

Default Noticed This Also

Hi Harvey
I am looking to buy a V60 and I noticed this too. Would be keen to get feedback as the D3/D4 would be my preference subject to economy? If there is still a real difference in true mpg then I will choose the D2.

Good post.

Good post.
CraigV60 has just posted a report on his, now D4, V60 in the V60 section, http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=174072 It will be interesting to follow this and see how it develops.

If the new D2, 3 and 4 engines all give the same emissions and economy then I am really struggling to see the point of the D2 engine when it is so far down on power to the others. Incidentally, I have been very pleased with my car but I would be even more pleased if I could get the same mpg with a bit more oompphh in reserve if required. Very interesting development. Hopefully others will join in and we can find out if the new D3 and D4 engines live up to their promises.
