Default Xc70 215/65/17

Despite being a dyed in the wool Vdub owner I’m on my fourth volvo estate (second XC70).
Please excuse the tide of questions, they are always consistent with a new purchase. 🤣

Have just bought an Ocean Race with the factory 17s. I see 215/70/16 are the largest one can fit without issues. 215/65/17 are within a mm or two.
Anyone have first hand experience of fitting larger 17 tyres and if so, what brand worked?
Many thanks 🙏🏻

there is a tire size comparison site which will tell you which sizes are cross compatable including speedometer dicrepancys for each size .

Hi chap/chapess

I got the info from my OP from a tyre comparison site. Have previously fitted 215/70/16 but the 17s are bigger (according to calculator) by 2mm. (711 v 709)

Was hoping someone had first hand experience, as we all know brands can vary so much, especially when you start getting into AT/SUV tyres v road treads.

An American reckons 225/65/17 will fit on stock height but have yet to see anything to corroborate they did it or it’s internet rumour 👍🏻

Not sure I understand what you are asking.

The last 2 digits of the tyre size is fixed, and is the size of your wheel - either 16 or 17 inch - what have you got?

You can't fit 16" tyres on a 17" wheel, or vice versa.

The other numbers are width (215mm, 225mm etc) and profile (60%, 70% etc) and are variable, but your wheel diameter is fixed, unless you are planning on new wheels.

I have 17” wheels. 16” tyres obvs won’t fit (although I bet someone has tried )

Comparing diameter between 16 & 17s.

What I’m asking is will a 215/65/17 fit under the arches with no interference. I have used the afire mentioned 16” as a reference which we know does fit.

I had confidence my tyre sizes weren’t typos

fitting under the arches isn't really the problem, the problem is more that the larger you go, the more your wheel rubs on the inner wing which means you have to change your steering stops, which in turn means a greatly reduced turning circle, this is a common complaint

whereas with the 16's I have on mine it honestly does't really seem any different to any other car I've had, maybe I'm a bit more careful but it doesn't add any extra 'points' to my turns

if it's just a cosmetic consideration I personally would just leave it alone

I work in rural devon and negotiate ‘Devon Banks’ daily. It’s more of a comfort/clearance thing.

But would look wheezer also 😁
