V50 dpf issues
Evening all,
So I bought a v50 last weekends, its a 2008 2.0 diesel auto. I collected the car on firday last , drove round all weeked with no issues although I suspect fuel consumption is a little high only managing 7.2 liters per 100 kms. When I was driving to work monday about 80kms along a motorway I had a message on the display come on reading "soot filter full reference owners manual" this came on after about 40 kms and the went out after a few mins. I contacted the garage I bought the car from advising him I had the message and it would probably return and he would then need to sort it . So again on my way home I had the same message come on after about 40kms then followed by "engine system service required".this massage stayed . I returned the car to the garage the next day for him to sort it. He returned the car on friday saying he got a forced regen done and all was well . On my way home I got the soot filter message again, as id expected. My suspension is the filter is f@@ked and needs replacement, I dont know how to proceed thought. Should I ask for the car to be repaired again or demand my money back, as I dont have any faith in the garage fixing the car correctly. What would guys advise ? Sorry for the ling post and thanks for reading. |

You need to get the codes read by a VIDA machine (Volvo Information Aftercare Diagnosis). Thats the starting place. It could be a number of things. |

Did you get a warranty of any sort ?? It sounds like the DPF will need to be replaced as it's probably full of Zinc ash, which might be why the previous owner sold it. If the folks that sold it refuse to either replace the DPF or give you a full refund, then try the small claims court, as it was not fit for the purpose for which it was sold. Don't forget that what you or the dealer say to each other does not matter much in court. They will want facts, figures and paperwork to support your claim. Vid clips of the warning light would be good and I would also get an Indy garage to write an inspection report etc. You should win the court action which should be for the cost of a new Volvo DPF and all costs (Keep all receipts). A gen Volvo DPF is around 2000 and a reasonable aftermarket one around 1000 quid. If you buy a post 2004 DPF diesel, I would always factor in the cost of a new DPF. That could mean budgeting for 2000 quid in maintenance costs if both the DPF and cam belt service is due, plus a real good full service including new brakes tyres and MOT etc. I'm not a fan of the V50, as it is not much better than the V40 classic, but has quite a number of expensive parts like self levelling shocks and rain sensing screen that are rather expensive. Bad news if you don't have a warranty of some type. Buying a used Volvo with an auto box can be a gamble if you don't have a power train warranty, as the TCU can fail and they are between 3 and 4000 Euros to replace (No one makes an aftermarket TCU as far as I'm aware). If you short trip a lot, the only type of diesel with a DPF that seems to be good is an expensive hybrid.
