Default Replacement of COMPLETE STEERING LOCK

I bought my 1990 volvo 760 gle estate with the ignition lock completly broken. I was told that in order to fix it I would have to replace the complete steering lock. In fact, the ignition lock and the steering lock are build togethar. Few weeks ago I found it on ebay and now I have it here with me. I was woundering if anybody knows how difficult it is to replace it. I tried to replace by myself but as I am not a professional and I am afraid to do anything wrong I stoped. It seams very easy but I am not sure how sensible the steering is and what could eventuay be damage whit any wrong movement. I manage to unscrew the steering and right now it is almost free but still fixed to something inside in the front of the car wicht I can not identify. Anybody? I would appreciate any advice, in who simple of complex the replacement is. And if I should or not carring on in order to replace this part.

It shouldn't be a problem. The column is held in the car by a bolt underneath, a pinch bolt to the steering rod, and a few set bolts at the base of the column.

If it is just the locking bit which is bust, you may be able to get it out by removing the cover under the dash, removing the bolt which holds the column in place and then depressing a small button underneath the lock unit - this allows the lock unit to pull away from the rest of the column.

Both operations are detailed in the Haynes Manual for the 740 part 10 sections 27, 28. It is difficult to do this job for the first time without one. If you haven't got one I would do so - they aren't perfect but cover most things. Ebay often has one very cheap - Halfords often do them for £10-12.

Regards

John Davies

G'day Soares71, I know your post was several months ago But I now have a similar problem with the Ignition / steering lock on my 88 Volvo 760 GLE, though in my case the steering has locked up solid. I wonder if you would be kind enough to post a follow up of the actions that you ended up by taking and how it has all turned out.

Many thanks
