Question Immobiliser problem???

An old problem that I thought was long past, has started to rear its ugly head again

The problem that is happening again is that when I unlock my car and try to start the engine, the car won't start. The following dash lights illuminate; orange arrow, engine management light, battery light.

When I try for a third time to start, I also get the battery light on as well.

What happened in the past was that if I used my key fob (remote)to unlock the car, and the car would not start, I found that by locking and unlocking the car by the remote a couple of times, would actually sort out the problem. Since then, I have used the key in the door to lock and unlock the car without any further problems.

This is why I think it could be an immobiliser problem, and possibly something to do with the damp conditions. Trouble is that I don't have a wiring diagram to try and work out the problem.

Whether coincidence or another possible cause for this, was to move the auto gearlever away from P and back again...just incase there maybe a sensor to prevent the car from starting unless in P (Park).

The car does not turn the starter over and over (like if you had a flat battery).

Has anyone else suffered the same symptoms...and if so, how was it sorted!!

Have you replaced the ignition switch yet? This could be causing these symptoms....also the connector to the immobiliser antenna on the ignition barrel too goes open circuit.

No. Ignition switch is original. So is the immobiliser a function of the ignition switch, or part of the alarm/central locking action.

Thanks Tec

Also......could the problem be with the auto gearbox?? As mentioned above, could be coincidence but on occasions the car has started after moving the gear lever away from Park and back into Park.

Is there a microswitch on the gear selector (target near) that when in P it allows the starting circuit to make.

Just looking at possibles............since i don't have circuit diagrams, etc, to give a more detailed diagnostic!!

Yes there is, AKA PNP switch on top of the gearbox.
Has this got worse as the weather has got colder?

Hi Chris

Yep....this thing happenened probably same time last year...so could be weather induced.

Is the PNP switch accessable from within the car, or is this more of a 'car on ramps' sort of thing.

Quick fix or 'nightmare from hell' sinario

Here's how to do it:

http://volvospeed.com/Repair/pnpswitch.php

Short term fix:

If outside temperature/engine/gearbox is cold, warm the PNP switch with a hair dryer.

With the engine off operate the gear lever through each gear position 20 times to clean the contacts.

Thanks for this Chris, excellent linky

I'll do the 'quick fix' approach for the time being, with a view to pricing up the PNP switch.

What does PNP actually stand for??

Thanks, Darren
