Default Please don't scrap it! 2013 V70 D4 2.0 five cyl SE Auto.

2013 V70 2.0 D4 five cylinder SE Auto. Great car, best ever, averaging 47.6 mpg. Rear spoiler, smart black leather interior. Heated electric seats. Satnav, handsfree, AC freezing, tinted windows etc

Drives perfect with regular servicing and oil changes at 5,000 miles.

Sadly forced into the bank on narrow lane last night. Crumped nearside wing, smashed headlight (still mostly working), bonnet dent.

Still drives fine, wheels, suspension etc all good. Newish high spec Continental Premium Contact 7 tyres.

Undoubtedly will be insurance right off.

****ed off, best car ever, would have lasted years.

Any interest once insurance value agreed?

If its the best car you've ever owned, why are you getting rid of it? Why don't you buy it from the insurance company? Maybe the buying fee might be more reasonable than you think...

I wouldn't just jump immediately to getting rid. That means you have to buy another car, which in today's market will likely cost you a few grand on top of the insurance settlement, or even finance (depending on what you buy).

Sometimes its better to keep what you know.

I understand that. But repair cost surely with new wing bumper and bonnet (if can be found) will be over 3 thousand at least.

Maybe the insurance money (less the £500 excess) would be better put to a 2014 V70 with lower mileage, if such can be found.

And then there is the repair time. Can't see it less than two or three months when I will need car.

Given the car has done nearly 260k miles, yes I expect your insurer would deem it uneconomical to repair as the repair costs are likely to exceed 60% of its value.

So either ask your insurer for a settlement figure with retained salvage (i.e. you keeping the car) or just repair it yourself.

Second hand parts I estimate IRO £500 max.

£600 to get the front end painted.

This assumes no damage to the structures behind the bumper or wing of course....

There's usually a few breaking on eBay, might be worth a couple of emails to breakers before deciding?

Otherwise, I'll have your rear spoiler please!

Yup, 267,000 now. So parts, paint and fitting then ends up over £2,000 if you can find a repairer.

No idea what they might offer, I bet hardly the £6 to £7,000 they ate listed if you can find one. Is there any way of negotiating the value on a sort of like for like basis if they offer silly money?

I didn't realise the mileage was so high. Its likely taking the age/mileage into consideration that it wouldn't be an economical repair from an insurance point of view.

It depends how much you value it I suppose. You'll probably be spending what its worth to get it fixed or a considerable chunk anyway.

You aren't going to get anywhere near 6 or 7k for a 11 year old V70 with 267,000 miles on it. They'll give you the going rate for the car, which isn't very much being realistic.

What's it worth real world? Maybe £2,000-£2,500... You aren't going to get 6k or 7k. If you do, snap their hand off.

Whatever the mileage..if you like it and it's reliable..consider this:

My brother's 2015 V70 was written off a few months ago by rolling 20 feet backwards down a grassy slope as he forgot to put the handbrake on.....

So, very low speed accident in which the open driver's door was bent forwards by a tree. Damage also to the wing, rear bumper and exhausts. He was offered a choice by the very reputable insurance company...Either he got £10.5k and the company kept the damaged car. Or he kept the car and they gave him £7.5k.

He decided to keep the car which was otherwise lovely and only 75000 miles. The insurer's repair company directed him a few hundred yards along the road to an independent repairer who said that it would be fine with 2nd hand panels but it would obviously have to be all-new parts if done as an insurance claim. They sourced 2nd hand panels and good twin exhaust pipes, sprayed the panels..and charged him £2.5k. He says the work is excellent and has a great paint finish. He is now £5k better off, and still has the car he likes.

It seems madness to do anything but get yours fixed..it looks lovely

Going to revise my estimate having had a look on e-bay.

Bonnet - £80, Wing £40, Bumper £70, Headlight £120 -~ £300 for parts. All bolt on, you can then drive it until you find someone to paint it. So you might get sorted for sub-£1k.

EDIT: Add £150 for the washer jet and various trim, clips etc. A good bodyshop would repair that bonnet also.

WBAC values it at £1,700, if you're not claiming against another person I'd consider carefully whether its worth claiming and just paying to repair it.
