Default back to the fold - some advice

Hi guys,

Back to volvo fold after 6 years or so away.

Ive got a v70 2007 D5 Auto.
I got the car knowing a few issues and some not.

My power steering pump is making alot of whining noises, after changing the fluid its not made any difference if anything its go louder. Any recommendation where i can get a refurb pump from? Also is there any variations in parts?

Secondly the car is shaking quite when idling, is this common problem? Engine mounts? I remember on my S60 D5 the top mount and vaccum lines were known to go bad, not sure with this newer platform.

Help appreciated in advance.

Nice to be back in a volvo

How many miles are on this newly acquired V70? Describe the overall condition, please.
Best of luck with it.
If your question regarding, "variations in [refurbed] parts", is about quality, yes.
Now-a-days there's a plethora of shoddily constructed spares. This includes lowering the QA/QC of rebuilt parts.
You'd be better off buying a pump taken off as young a donor as you can find.

At least the power steering pump is easily accessed.
Still, you only want to do this maintenance job once.

Car has around 200k. I think I’ll struggle getting a second pump with lowish miles, given what’s out there. Who makes the genuine Volvo power steering pump? Ive seen some refurbed units on eBay. I don’t plan to keep the car forever, just want this sorted. .

Any ideas on the rough idle? I live in Wigan anyone good with cars living close by?

When was the car last serviced, particularly the air filter and fuel filter?

If it hasn't been done for a while, it might be worthwhile giving it a service. A blocked fuel filter can cause all sorts of issues.

Shaking idle, I'd be leaning towards bad injectors or the injector wiring, but start with the basics first like a service. A fuel filter and air filter are cheap. EGR valve can also cause lumpy idle, especially if its clogged up.

I don't think your car has vacuum engine mounts. Being a 2007, it has a euro 4 engine. Euro 3's used the vacuum system, whereas euro 4 used a completely different system with solid mounts and an electronically controlled turbo actuator, as opposed to vacuum.

I'm not sure who makes the original power steering pumps, but there's plenty of reputable aftermarket brands out there selling these pumps too. The likes of Meyle, Bosch and Febi Bilstein. These are a fraction of what Volvo charge for a pump and are still very good quality. You can get a new aftermarket one for around £200. Don't buy the cheap pumps from unknown brands. They don't last.

A refurbed pump, if its a decent brand, may not be a bad idea. If there's not much difference in the price between refurbed and new aftermarket, I'd go for a new one. At 200,000 miles, the pump has done its day. Getting second hand, like you say, is a gamble.

Fuel filter is on the list, it just had a basic oil service before I bought the car. It’s been maintained by a Volvo specialist most its life.

Do you have the part number for the steering pump?ill get a new aftermarket one with warranty. Ive ran diesel cleaner through the tank hydro industrials stuff it perked up the engine a bit.

I don't have a part number, sorry. Mine is a facelift V70, so it has a different pump and a completely different part number.

Just be careful when you search for the pump. Yours being a 2007, it isn't actually a facelift. Yours is known as a P2 or mark 2. Your car is the last of the older shape before they swapped to the newer one basically, but parts are completely different as is the design on the newer models. So you need to search for P2 or mark 2 pump, not mark 3 or P3.

I notice you're based in Manchester. There's a few highly regarded independent Volvo specialists in this area, in case you weren't aware - Hallmark Volvo in Stockport, Trevor Burgess in Hyde and Independent Vehicles Ltd in Timperley. They know Volvo's inside out (new and old) and are very reasonable. If you didn't fancy doing this job yourself, these garages may be worth a shout.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016.

Could be either then ?

Yes, the third generation P3 came out in 2007, but just because a car is a 2007 doesn't necessarily mean its a third generation car. I've never seen a 2007 V70 facelift... They've always been the older shape (P2).

For example, my Dad's V70 is a 57 plate (September 2007), but its a facelift, so its a P3. There's V70's that were released 6 months previously in March 2007, but they weren't facelift and are completely different in terms of looks, design and interior layout to my Dad's.

As the original poster's car is a 2007, its right on the cross-over point from P2 to P3. If its a 2007, its highly likely its still the older P2 shape.

Maybe, but the OP needs to check what he's got right ?
Your signature states you have a 2007 S80 (P3).
So 2007 could be either as the OP has only stated that its a 2007......

That's not quite the same.

The S80 changed shape to P3 in 2006 (56 plate). The V70 changed shape from P2 to P3 at a later date than the S80 did.

Yes the OP needs to check what he's got, but if its a 2007 plate V70 as in "07" on the number plate, it'll be a P2 shape, not a facelift P3. So he doesn't want to buy the wrong pump from the wrong era of car and end up being in a sticky situation because it doesn't fit. That's the point I'm making. His car being right on the cross-over period makes getting parts that bit trickier. I'm sure many a person has been caught out on that, as parts sites aren't always reliable.
