I had my 2006 V70 AWD haldex oil and filter changed by a local independent garage.
To answer lynne hubby's question I believe you will have a Gen 3 unit and yes you will need to drop the rear end of the prop shaft. You wont be able to remove the filter if the prop shaft is in place.

It will depend on the prop shaft coupling size with regards to can you get the pump out without removing the prop.

I would expect to have to remove the prop in all instances myself.

I must say that if I had a Gen 3 version I would be more than happy to pull out the filter and replace. Whist there I would be happy to suck out the old oil and renew and do so a month later then every 2 years. I think that would keep very fresh and be easy.

On a 4th gen the prop needs to come off to reach the filter in which case you may as well take it all out.

I tend to keep my cars a long time and to do this successfully I'm fastidious about running on clean oil / fluids. Is there a recommended time / mileage to service the Haldex ? Any idea what it costs at a good indi ?
Hello Frank,

In 2017 I bought a 6 month old XC60 D5, and back then Had a look at the service intervals, the haldex as per Volvo was 40,000 miles before the first change was due. My car only had 4000 on it then. In my second year of ownership I decided to change the haldex oil when I serviced it, bought the kit from haldex repairs U.K.. cost around the £45 mark I think ?

I was shocked at how full of sludge the gauze was, oil was black and very dirty. The reading I did back then, Volvo did away wiTh a changeable filter and just kept the metal gauze as the only filtration. Bear in mind my car only had around 14000 miles on it, if that. And the oil was well past its best.

So the Volvo 40,000 miles seems like a great way to sell you a new pump & clutch at 40k when it gives up.

I did notice the second time I did the haldex service, the oil was much cleaner and almost nothing sat in the gauze. On that I left it the following year.

I own a XC70 D5 as well but haven’t needed to service that one yet as the pump was replaced recently, job looks a bit more than the XC60.

I'd like to do this on my 14 plate XC70, however only got two axle stands, does the car need to be level when filling?

Phil,

Useful website: - https://www.haldexrepairs.co.uk/what...-is-on-my-car/

My '12 XC60 is Gen4 same as my '09 XC70, so yours should be also. As stated in previous posts, the prop needs to be dropped on a diesel to allow the haldex motor to be removed due not clearing the propshaft bearing. Too much for me on the driveway, so had my local mech. do it.

Had my XC70 filter and fluid changed at 170k and fluid was in great condition.
