Default How and where to drill drain hole for water in bulkhead

Good morning boys.
I have a recently purchased Volvo S80 2008 D5.
It came with a host of other problems; suspension rattle, dashboard rattle etc, but one of the most unusual problems was that of the sound of water sloshing from side to side when going round corners.
I read the forums and repaired the windscreen seal but could find no clear answer to the problem of water removal.
So; my son and I decided to investigate and record the solution.
We removed the cowl under the windscreen and drilled a small 4mm diameter hole into the lowest point of the n/s bulk head box section immediately below the windscreen.
Approximately 1/2 litre of water flowed out of the hole. I have not treated the edges of the hole yet.
I have had no water in the bulkhead issues since.
Please follow the attached link for a small video we made during the repair.
Thanks and good luck.

Hi, I am considering buying my first V70. Is it possibly to identify which years are susceptible to this windscreen issue? Are there years / models to avoid? Is there a date where they sorted this problem and it no longer occurs?

Was looking at a possible purchase today and asked the dealer if there were any leaks or if the windscreen had been rebonded. He denied any issues, but the MOT history showed that a bonding failure of the windscreen had been noted as an advisory a few years ago!

No, its a common issue on the P3 platform in general. Its pretty much guaranteed to occur at some point.

So 2006-2016 for the S80 and 2007-2016 for the V70/XC70. Unless you buy an older model, but they're getting on in age now and that can present its own set of problems.

Thanks for the advice. That's a nuisance, not sure I want to gamble on inheriting water sloshing around in the dash and electrical failure.

Am I being over cautious? Do I just check for damp carpets and then just pay for a new windscreen / rebounding straight off?

Checking for damp carpets is a good start. Getting inside the car and pushing the windscreen away from you is another good test. If the windscreen feels loose, the bonding has likely packed in.

You can get the windscreen removed and rebonded, but most glass companies will state right from the outset that if the glass breaks on removal (which can happen), you have to buy a new windscreen. Its a gamble really. It can break quite easily...

My Dad got a new windscreen in his V70 recently. National Windscreens rebonded the old one originally, but it didn't last long (I assume it wasn't done right). Raised a complaint with them and they just came out and fitted a brand new windscreen under warranty. This was all done through insurance, so didn't cost him anything. No water leaking inside now.

If you want to play it safe, get the windscreen sorted from the outset. So your options are;

-Get the existing rebonded (it could break, so you may need a new glass anyway).

-Just bite the bullet and get a brand new windscreen.

You may have to enquire with your insurance company to see will they cover it. Windscreen's aren't cheap, especially if you have to pay for it yourself. I suggest looking into it with your insurance before making a decision.
