Suggest you do a few 'brim-to-brim' sessions, just in case the fuel consumption computer is incorrect. Mine is regularly (but consistently) about 5% optimistic. Yours could be more 'out' but in the other direction. Otherwise, you do seem to have a thirsty D4.

I am somewhat pedantic about fuel consumption records and can account for every gallon of fuel that I have used since January 1981.

The Volvo's trip computer is the only one that I have ever had which is accurate, as you say to within 5%, but my brim to brim figures show the
1mpg improvement after having the Polestar upgrade done.

I would say a 1% improvement is both marginal and somewhat difficult to prove. That aside, I am convinced you have a problem. I have never got less than 40mpg on a tank. When I am on my own I drive with some enthusiasm, when I am with Mrs D, a lot more sedate. Mixture of upland hills and long motorways runs down to Plymouth. Your mpg is more like an AWD automatic. Just my opinion.

Came across this on Sweedspeed.

I managed to extract a "km/h" dial from an instrument cluster that I found at a car recycler (scrap yard) and move it over to my own instrument cluster, replacing the "mph" dial. So all is good now, instead of waiting (probably in vain) for a proper software fix by Volvo for the digital display, I now have an old-fashioned analog solution.

This solution is a lot less wasteful than the approach that Volvo wants you to take, which is replacing the entire instrument cluster. Financially, it is more acceptable too, at EUR 75 (plus about two hours of surgery) instead of EUR 915. (That's an $1120 difference at today's rate...)
Sorry just realised I posted this in the wrong thread.

Theoretically there shouldn't be much difference but the auto should keep the engine in its most efficient range. Mine seems to vary little according to how it is driven, although according to the trip computer, contrary to following the change up light I am getting better consumption by keeping revs between 1800 and 2500rpm.

In truth my Polestar D4 has so much power and torque that you really don't need to drive it hard which is exactly why I was expecting much better of it by way of fuel consumption.

Incidentally it has also been run almost exclusively on a diet of BP and ESSO premium diesel, now using standard Shell, again there appears to have been a marginal improvement both in consumption and smoothness - although I hope that hasn't speeded the appearance of the dreaded EGR problem!
Hi Richard,

Sory, just noticed yours is a XC60 while I have a V60 which is probably why my fuel economy is better. Mine is a manual and I do tend to drive it hard and while my mileage is much lower than it used to be I guess I'm doing 18000 pa.

I have never used premium fuel in the car and I simply fill it up at whatever garage is closest when it needs fuel, be that BP or Tesco.

Cue EGR valve failing tomorrow!

I agree entirely and I am clutching at straws over this fuel consumption.

Worryingly since the EGR replacement last week it is even worse! A two day trip to Honiton last weekend, both directions in the dark, 330 mile round trip, average speed 50mph 33.6mpg!

That's two up plus a Jack Russell and an over night bag. This weekend it's a 360 mile M25/M40 run to Birmingham, we'll see if leaving the dog at home improves the fuel consumption!

Next week I am going to chuck it back at the dealer with some accurate fuel data and ask for Volvo to comment on this car's undue thirst.

Check engine light back on for me, it's lasted a good 3 months this time but it's another trip back to the dealers. It's too short notice for a courtesy car or collection and the leasing company won't let me keep driving it so I have to arrange some way of getting home after dropping it off.

It is now the least reliable car I've ever owned, including a couple of Peugeots in the 90s and a Hillman Avenger. AND I'M GETTING FED UP WITH IT.

What exactly did they do 3 months ago? It should have been the coolant hose permanent fix ...

They replaced the inlet manifold pressure sensor. I had the egr fix done 12 months previous but I think it was just before the permanent(!) fix came out so I'm also expecting that at some point.
