Default Fuel Consumption

I just bought a S80 2.4SE (170bhp) Auto on a 2000 (X) plate and am extremely happy with it except for one thing: it drinks petrol! It seems the average mpg is 19 for town driving (at an avg speed of 20 mph), whilst on the motorway it seems fine. Its had a recent service at 92k (on 94k now), so what could be the problem?

The things that I know to check:

1. air/fuel filter
2. spark plugs/leads etv
3. switch petrol - Shell Optimax or BP Ultimate
4. change/clean injectors. Any recommendation of where to buy new ones if this is the case? I've tried putting in additive that is supposed to clean the injectors - no noticeable difference yet.

Is there anything else I can check?

Cheers

Ali

Your consumption figures are about right. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Things that I have done so far are to inflate the tyres to 36psi (they were at 29 psi), and filled up using optimax. So far have done 20 miles mixed (half and half most likely) and the average mpg reading is at 34.7 which I'm more than happy with.

I'll post the final mpg in a week or so. Got a feeling its gonna beat the 19mpg I was getting!

Cheers

Ali,
Re your average MPG, have you any idea how accurate your computer is?

Also, has the ride quality suffered with the higher tyre pressure?

I've no idea how accurate it is, but its reading an avg mpg of 27 now (190 miles done). I guess I'll only find out once the tank runs dry and I do a manual calculation as to the accuracy of the computer.

The ride quality is still the same with the increased tyre pressure. I just followed the recommendations on the fuel flap for 17" alloys which are on my Volvo.

Cheers

Just thought I'd up date you on my best mpg to date ;

38.2 mpg on a 140 mile run !!!

Not bad for a big petrol car !!

Cheers,

John.
