The headlight wiper motors were also dead.

Dismantling showed that they had both suffered the common fault with these, in that the main red gear wheel had seized inside its bearing.

I ran a finger sander through the metal bearing surface and everything went back together nice and smooth.

Starting to feel like a car again though.
Apologies for hijacking this part of the thread a little - I need to repair my NS headlamp wiper and wanted to refer to your photos later.

What a handsome thing a 240 is.

After all the tweaking and sorting out any teething problems, the car is running beautifully.

We took it out for drive it day.

It hit a major birthday.

I took it back up to Arbroath to see the previous owner and the family, who were really happy to see the car back on the road.

I decided it was time to focus on the finishing touches.

The trim clips for the hockey sticks had all rusted off.

New ones from Brookhouse (and some free sweets!)

Which meant I could refit the hockey sticks.

Next up, an all over clay bar treatment to try and get rid of the years of baked on grime. The paint felt like sandpaper to the touch!

Then a polish, wash and wax, followed by some linseed oil rubbed into all the very tired looking plastics.

Good as new!

A quick coat of black paint on the new sills. These are going to be body coloured ideally, but this improves things in the meantime.

What a cracking looking car.

The badges were refitted at last.

Some valve caps.

And finally, the interior got a good going over with a vacuum cleaner and flashdash restorer.

Today's rain really shows off the beading.

What's left to be done?

I need to take the doors off, fix some rust on the inner skins and rehang them.

The boot lid needs some damage resprayed.

The sills need a coat of body colour.

A little bit of touchup paint to fix a couple of scratches.

I think that's it. I may even take it to a few shows as I've found 240s to be a little bit under-represented, and saloons basically non existent!

A good time to look back?

Excellent stuff! More inspiration for me to at least try to sort my other beast rather than selling it as "In need of light restoration".

You've certainly achieved excellent results on your 240 and looking back at what it was to what it is now is amazing!

Anyone want to buy a 1997 940 Classic? After seeing this latest set of pictures I'm tempted to re-commission SFSS so I can enjoy having a saloon rather than an estate car as the "toy".

The only, very minor, niggle with Juular's is that he couldn't get the trip to show "111.1" to match the odometer!

There aren't enough saloon cars any more! I have no interest in the blobby beach ball shape of modern cars, and as much as I can appreciate the iconic looks of an estate, I still feel the three box shape is hard to beat from an aesthetic point of view.

I agree, even as an estate owner, the three box is grand.
A certain majestic air, with a large saloon!👍

I agree: the RB (244) and GAM (122S) are both 3 box motor cars.

Completely agree that the Volvo saloons are great looking cars, not as practical but most definitely a far better looking car.
