Default Anyone got/tried/considered the 1.6D V70?

I'm usually on the 850/V70 P1 and diesel forums so first post in this section. I currently have a year 2000 P1 V70 Tdi which has done 208k almost faultlessly since 93k (when bought in 03). But the time has come to move on and I'm looking at P3 diesel V70s from main dealers Selekt range as I want a lower mileage. I also want economy and it seems the latest common rail 2.0 and 2.4D engines do less mpg than my Audi Tdi..... I'm also aware that the P3 V70's are "Fords" but I still like the shape of them (in preference to the P2 actually). I've tried a 2.0D and was happy with the performance but what about the 1.6D? It sounds implausible but has low VED and good claimed mpg. But is it gutless and noisy? Any opinions would be most welcome as would any comparisons of current "Ford" V70s with older Volvo V70s. Regards (and happy new year!)

No experience myself but I'd say it would struggle with a 1.6

Have you checked the kerb weight of a P3?! Many of the pies apparently ended up in it's possession!

As well as our D5 V70, we (the wife that is) has a 1.6D Drive, V60.
It's absolutely fine in general terms but is no road racer. Overtakes need careful consideration but it is great around town as well as rural runs.
Untested on a motorway. Its free tax for year 1 then 30 pounds per year.
Its frugal alright. Noisy?....cant say it's that noisy compared to a larger lump but compared to another 1.6D Im not sure.
Comfy enough. Not a caravan puller though but spacious and economical.
Even more spacious in a V70 though.

I have done 32,000 mile sin the last 12 months in my V70 SE Lux Drive 1.6. This is the 2012 model with the 6 speed manual box and the Sensus sat Nav system.

I have just done a 24 hour round trip to Cornwall and back (750 miles) and averaged 51.3 mpg according to the computer. Nice and quiet, very comfortable with enough power, but certainly no road burner. I do also pull a 1150kg ulw caravan with it and it copes ok - only struggling with steep inclines.

I can recommend this car and will probably get another. Not sure what the automatic version which they now do is like though.

The 1.6 D works quite well in the new V70 not at all noisy ,You reaqlly need to try one yourself to see if it is what you want, it is capable of 50+ mpg .. and economy is the only reason you buy a 1.6D V70
However the old V70 2002-5 163 bhp D5 will do this too and the car is of better quality throughout ..and has a great deal more performance than the 1.6 D . Try one of these too you wont look back .... ...

Ditto.

I was told by the main dealer that there are two 2.0D's - a 4-cylinder and a 5-cylinder. Like tommyweaves, my S80 has the 5-cylinder 163bhp version; apparently this unit is built by Volvo, not imported from another manufacturer.

Yes, this is what I keep hearing on the forum generally but I wonder. Are you changing, say, suspension components at lower mileages on the P3 V70s? Or seeing diesel engine problems at lower mileages i.e. WHAT is actually of inferior quality? I have to say I prefer the shape of the P3 to the P2 and you get so much more as standard spec now e.g. electric driver's seat, retractable mirrors - more to go wrong, I know, but very convenient and useful. Regards.

Hiya Bill, sorry for the late reply. I've had my MY2012 1.6D V70 for 5 months now and I've got to say I love it! The engine is surprisingly pokey actually, it accelerates perfectly well and is very comfortable and unflustered at motorway speeds, even fully loaded. I was a bit worried coming from a 2 litre petrol engined car but really there's nothing to worry about.

Build quality seems excellent, but I suppose it's still a bit new for wear and tear issues to show.
