DSTC error
Last week I was driving to the airport. Whilst cruising at 70 there was a bang (sounded a bit like the central locking), the car juddered very slightly and the information sign lit up on the dash with DSTC requires service. The car drove normally but the rev counter didn't work and stayed at zero.
Today I returned to collect the car from the airport. When starting up all the error message had gone. After 10 minutes the same error message came up but this time the engine cut out - fortunately the dual carriageway I was on was quiet and I could coast to the edge of the road. The car wouldn't start. When I removed the key and put it back in again the car returned to normal - no error messages. The remaining 30 minutes of the journey were uneventful. The car is going to the dealer tomorrow - I will update after the visit. |

The speedo signal comes from the DTSC system so if that throws a wobbler the speed goes to zero like you mentioned it did. For sure ther'll be some stored error codes on the system so going in to the dealer is probably the best idea. Prepare yourself for the worst though. If the ECU has broken it's really expensive to replace..........

DSTC = Really bad news
I have just had the DSTC service required signal on my S80 at (21000 miles) I took it to the Volvo dealer only to be told the control unit ABS / Traction control need replacing. When I came back to collect the car they told me they had found another related problem. I beleive it was the "master" brake control unit. Cost £950 + VAT + fitting 3 - 4 hrs at £80 + vat per hour. They gave me the keys of the car as it was considered safe to drive but when I went to move it it only travelled a few feet and the electronic hand brake came on and would not release. The control unit for that had just packed up. I had to leave the car at the garage and wait for both parts to arrive and be fitted.
To the best of my knowledge the total repair bill would have been in the region of £1800 if I had had to pay. Fortunately Volvo covered all three repairs under warranty. I hope you are still under warranty!! Big Swede. |

The visit to the dealer was interesting. The first incident of the DSTC warning light coing on wasn't recorded in the vehicle log. The second incident was but the technician didn't have much to go on. When I said to him about the rev counter going to zero that was the 'eureka' moment. The crankshaft sensor has been replaced as a result.
Another issue was also resolved on this visit. I had heard some water sloshing around and had assumed that it was my nearly empty windscreen washer reservoir. It transpires that there is a known issue of trapped water - the fix involves drilling holes (I kid you not) to release the water followed by a thorough anti-corrosion treatment, sealant etc So the car spent 2 1/2 days with the dealer in total. As a loan car I had a S40 2.0D R-Design. Same engine as my car and in a smaller body was obviously much quicker. The car was obviously set up as 'sporty' i.e. lots of road noise, engine noise thumps and bumps etc Getting the S80 back was a relief! Last edited by adsk; Aug 7th, 2009 at 16:14.
