Unhappy 940 Head gasket?

Hey everybody, I am quite a new member of the VOC forums and have a 940 Wentworth which has developed a problem; the head gasket is apparently on it's way out. I took it to my local Volvo garage who were very helpful and diagnosed the problem(sods law, I spent 3 years with rovers and no HGF and I get it with a volvo) and quoted £450 to get it fixed. Now I am a poor student and the MOT is due next month so I am wondering if its worth spending the money getting it fixed or should I sell the car as it stands and then just try and find a different volvo? Just because its a wentworth and the rear diff/axel is quite sought after apparently.

Thoughts and opinions are welcome!

The 940 engine is dead easy to work on - I'd say one of the easiest I've come across. At one point I was taking the head off every few weeks (I was modding the engine ). The only (slightly) awkward part is mucking about with the turbo - but even so, there is so much room!

£450 sounds a bit steep really, but you are quoting main dealership prices! Find a good independent if you can't do it yourself - their labour charges will be much less. Ask for recommendations on this forum.

Fwiw, £450 to replace head gasket by a Volvo dealer sounds a very good price to me.... I was quoted much more than that by many garages when enquiring as to hg replacement in my 940 diesel and also in a previous non-Volvo petrol car....

So far the cheapest quote is £400 off a local garage which is usually cheaper than anyone else around here so I may have to either sell or scrap her :'(

Hi PCJ
Don't give up yet, Give Brian a ring at Jump Leads St Annes 01253 714207 and ask him for a price. He did my 940 a couple of months ago, a lot less than £400. Usually able to fix you up with a courtesy car as well. Got to be worth a phone call.

Pete.
