V70, but which one?
I am about to buy a V70, last week I almost bought a 2010 D5 R Design after putting a holding deposit and traveling over 200miles we found the car to be not as we thought so we got our money back.
I am going to look at a 2010 2.4D 175 BHP R Design tomorrow apart from having 30 BHP and a turbo less than the D5 is this model considered a decent car? Or should I hold out for a D5 twin Turbo? What ever I buy it will be an Auto and possible will want to re map in the future and the car will be used for towing a caravan. Thanks Richard... |

Which V70
Even a D5 from 2010 will give 420nm of torque and 205bhp so these are good numbers for a caravan puller. the 2.4D will give similar torque numbers.
However, if you see something wearing a D5 with low miles from say 2008 dont dismiss it. My 2008 D5 has had the Polestar upgrade and provides more torque than a non remapped 2010my at 450nm and 205bhp over it's original 185bhp. The difference is appreciated. I've had other remaps in the past where the figure's leapt skywards from the originals, but the Polestar upgrade at around £600 is subtle but useable without invalidating any warranty from Volvo. I dont pull a caravan but know that I wouldnt even notice it if I didnt have mirrors on this machine. I have convinced myself of some very minor (negligible really) fuel savings too but cant provide any "evidence". Just another option for you that may save some beer tokens. Either should be capable of pulling the caravan. The D5 may do it better but the 2.4D will probably be more economical when not pulling it.

My personal choice would be the D4 with a manual gearbox, as they're much more economical than the auto boxes, with less turbo problems to worry about.
Thats just my opinion. |

After driving a fewV70,s I found the 175 & 185 bhps ones to be ok but as this car was replacing a quick X5 and for towing I test drove a 205bhp twin turbo and decided that was my best option. Just more pullingt power all the time and reasonably quick if you want.
So I have recently bought a V70 Lux 205Bhp Geartronic, Not really used it much since I haved had it due to the weather. Richard... |

Ditto, the new D4 with manual box, or as it was originally known before they messed about with the badges, the D3!

The D3 or D4 was no go for me as the towing limit is only 1600kgs, so it has to be a 2.4
So far I have seen 47 mpg on the 80 mile journy back from the dealer, this was at no more than 70MPH. This has now dropped to just over 40MPG after doing town work. Figures from the DIM, not to bad for the horable weather we have had for a D5 TwinT Richard.. |
