Default narcoleptic diesel. What to replace?

For the first time in many months, the Rescue Dog fell asleep on me. Of course this was in the worst possible place, just moving off to cross the wastes of the Vauxhall one-way system. The symptom is that after sitting for a while, idling perfectly, the engine dies as I press the throttle to move away. The death is slow- a couple of seconds or so - and the idle just fades away no matter what I do. Turn everything off, foot off the pedal, and the Dog bursts into life straight away. No extra messages and no recurrence, either - it's as if the car has a software crash and just needs a reboot.

Which part should I think about changing? On my old AMG this was the MAF sensors (bloody thing had two. 600 quid!), but it went from being fine to being unusable in 200 miles. The Dog has only cut out four times in six months, each time in different circumstances.

Default Start with the easy stuff....

Can you vouch that the diesel filter is in good order and preferably a genuine/ good quality part?

no, not absolutely - I've been billed for it being changed but not seen the part myself.

Why would that clog up and then permit an *immediate* restart though?

Debris is forced/sucked against the filter, engine stalls, debris falls away, engine can then start again.
If you're still sceptical, bleed the filter housing to see what comes out.
