Rear boot / tailgate won't open
Hi all,
I have read through all your comments regarding the boot / tailgate not opening. Brought a section of 316 S/S from ebay and fitted it as "bestgear" discribed (thanks for the photo's and description) all with the tailgate closed. I pushed the cable "in" to the door release mechanism, but can't get the boot / tailgate to open? My next option is to replace the central locking box, but I need to open the tailgate to remove it! Any ideas how to release the tailgate from inside the car / boot? Rgds frustrated John |

Hi guys
I thought that my problem was linked to the rusted rod you mention in your excellent explanation. However when unmounting, I found that it was the cable/wire from the lock to the tailgate handle that was broken. How do I get the bottom part of the cable out in order to replace it? Thanks |

Thanks a lot for the write up! Replaced my rod today along with the rear wiper motor which have been on and off for a while. Everything works like a charm now :-)

Excellent write-up, once I worked out how to get the pin out - just knocked it through by tapping it with a hammer and nail.
Removing the spring proved problematic but got there in the end. I sprayed mine with white grease too and that helped a bit to make it work smoothly. I didn't realise the number plate bulb holders where twist in so damaged one side, but putting it back seemed ok. I also removed the rear wiper motor screws enough to help. Oh, and my big tip, I used a tent peg and chopped it down, it was a fraction thinner so just bashed the ends once in place to stop it popping out (also made it 10mm longer than the original one. Thank you very much - one happy tailgate owner |

Attempted this fix today. One of the nuts which holds the whole assembly to the tailgate couldn't be loosened. It's obviously been over tightened on manufacture and is just spinning freely.
So frustrating - couldn't get enough force onto the old pin as couldn't remove whole assembly. Annoyed!! |
