First, it is good that it is now working.

Second, having the problem resolve itself by just removing and reinstalling the generator suggests that it was a non obvious fault. The fact that you didn't actually intentionally repair anything may be cause for some concern.

The three bolted electrical connections on the generator are through-bolts going through insulating bushings or insulating washers. I am going to speculate that one of the insulating bushings / washers might have been out of position allowing a short circuit to the frame of the generator. Or the bolted electrical connection on the inside of the dynamo on one of the connections was poor. When you removed and then reinstalled the generator you disturbed the bolted connections resolving whatever issue was preventing operation. The generator obviously functions. The question is whether your fiddling effected a permanent fix or a temporary fix.

The problem may stay away, or it could re appear. The up-side is that if it re appears you now know where to look. This will likely require a dive into the inside of the generator to examine the bolted connections on the inside of the machine or the connections to the brushes.

Anyway I took the dynamo off planning on having it tested but spoke to the person who had refurbished it who said it is working perfectly. I refitted everything back together and hey presto it is all working as it should. I have absolutely no idea how or why, I am guessing a connection or something like that but it is working.
I can't thank you all enough. I do mean that. I haven't used my new car at all since I bought it and my three boys were really upset so to be able to pick them up in it today from school means alot.
Thanks

Excellent Joe, enjoy that motor car. Post some photos.

If the dynamo was thickly painted and the mounting bracket the same it may be that the dynamo wasn't earthed properly. Taking it on and off scrapes of the paint and restores the earth path. The rubber bushes in the mount and adjuster arm don't help either. This can also happen with the starter motor. The mounting flange of the motor and the block have to be bare metal. Sometimes not considered when repainting the block and motor.
