Volvo 760 1990 (please don't laugh
Ok I have a 1990 760 V6 estate (yes estate and I want to wake it up a touch, not to insane levels just give it a little more poke than it's got. Elseware on the forums I've put questions regarding V8 and V12 engine swaps but I've spoken to the man who knows about these things and it's expensive and time consuming.
Does anyone know of anything I could do with my standard engine ? I know it can be gas flowed and ported/polished etc but what about other engine details ? What about chips, turbos? Can I uprate the fuel system give it more pressure (or am I getting carried away now) What about these cyclone thingy's i'm reading about the gizmos which go in the intake pipe doing something strange with whatever it does? ~Charlotte |

To be honest, its very hard to do an awfull lot with the V6 engine performance wise.
You could go down the tried and tested route of better breathing to start with. So a Performance Panel Air filter, and a less restrictive exhaust would be a good starter. Then you could as you mentioned, whip the heads off and get them ported out so there gasket matched and polish them up. But on the V6 its time consuming, expensive, and if the engines running well i wouldn't want to disturb the heads really. Regarding forced induction, Don't bother with electric superchargers waste of money. You could grab the exhaust manifolds of a Renault 25 V6 Turbo, and set the turbo to around 5psi, and put some larger injectors in to match and create a Low Pressure Turbo V6 to give you a little extra shove, but costly and not really worth the gains. Or rig up a Supercharger to give you that 5psi. So that leaves you with Nitrous, will give you good gains, but expensive everytime you press the button and comprimises reliabilty. |

Have a NOS kit fitted, you could probably have another 75-100 BHP at the push of a button. simple and very effective

Upgrading
I was thinking something a little more constant than Nos. Turbo charging or just sticking a V8 in it would be good

Turbocharging the prv is funny...theres a nutter in the states on turbobricks.com with one in a 242 rally car, it makes 500bhp+ and has melted the whole drive train at some point or other A nice blower of a merc slk would be kinda cool...theres alot of options if your silly enough

I've got a 264 with the PRV engine, at the mo it's waiting for me to get around to restoring it. However i have thought about unleashing it's potential at some point. After all the PRV did ok in the rear engined Renault Alpine A310/610 the so called "french ferraris"!
If you look at the delorean owners clubs and specialists there is quite a lot can be done, i'd advise a visit to www.delorean.co.uk. Theres a stage 2 engine and box on the homepage and some info about it. Somewhere in the same site is a performance page detailing all the options for upgrading the PRV, and in fact the Volvo version of the PRV is a favoured basis for upgrading a delorean. Theres reference to the later 24v 3 litre used by peugeot & citroen capable of 300hp plus, and the 12v turbo used in the Venturi Atlantique capable of up to 400hp. Don't come cheap though! Just don't ask about flux capacitors... Rich |

Volvo Conversion
Hi Ok you say read the Delorean pages which I have done with great interest.
Question time I t says to get the con rods made 5mm shorter than stock where could I get these done ? It also says about a even fire and odd fire PRV engine how do I check to see if mine is even or odd fire without totally stripping it? It also says about obtaining a set of Renault 25 Turbo charged engine pistons now wouldn't they have the 5mm shorter con rods? Also does anyone know where I can get a non exchange Garret Turbo Charger ? Couldn't I just drop the Renault 25 Turbo Charged Engine in it? would Ineed to modify the bonnet to accomodate this? All good questions! And no i don't have a clue! I would imagine a decent automotive engineers would be able to chop the rods, but if it were me i think i'd entrust it to the delorean company, the PRV isn't your usual run of the mill engine and i'd prefer it to be handled/molested by someone whos seen a few before rather than someone who chances are, has never worked on one ever!
That i think is the crux of the problem with the PRVs, they are a fairly low volume engine, and a bit special, and i have found it difficult to get help, advice, spares etc But there are specialists out there if you look for them and they will help, albeit at a price. But the other side of the coin is that you'll probably have something special that no one else will, and the PRV once properly sorted is a gem of an engine. Most people seem to give up at the first hurdle when it comes to the PRV, but my way of thinking is that hurdles are there to be jumped! OK it doesn't make for an easy life... I would imagine that the 25 turbo motor would drop straight in, obviously its never THAT easy! but if i remember the turbo is behind the engine so i don't see a problem with the bonnet, and theres plenty of space on the 260 & 760 in this area. Also when i've seen Espace V6s the mounts look the same type as the volvo, but don't quote me! Good Luck, and i hope you see it through Rich |
