740 3 speed auto + overdrive problem

Hi All,
i have a 740 auto, 1988, 125K on the clock.
Some days i have a problem with the overdrive cutting out forcing it into 3rd and when i press the button i cant turn it back on again, other days it is fine! Normally when the overdrive cuts out the indicator lights up on the dash, but there has been occasions when it cuts out and the light doesn't light up.
I have been told that dirty oil could cause it, but although it hasn't been changed lately it appears clean on the dip stick.
Can anybody help or give me a link if this has been brought up before.

Blimey! This could be anything - a faulty relay, faulty solenoid on 'box, dirty electrical connections etc.

My first bet would be dirty electrics, esp at the connection on the 'box. Next would be the solenoid unit as they are prone to having the spring inside go weak (the solenoid itself is often still Ok)and finally the relay.
However the relay is the easiest thing to check, so try that first!
