Same thing happened to me, I just got some off a scrap car. They aren't particularly weird arms so you might get lucky and find some on another make of car which has similar arms (take old one to compare).
The way it happened was that i tried to use the wipers (when I first bought the car) when the windscreen was iced up. One wiper stripped immediately but on getting some replacements they worked fine as it was only the arm that stripped not the (probably much harder metal) stub you bolt it to.

Generic/pattern parts use generic springs that aren't always as strong allowing "wiper lift" at speed (anything over about 30-40mph in some cases! ) but even Volvo wiper arm springs go weak with age.
