'62 - '64 Grilles wanted
I'm looking for a pair of the '62-64 grilles for my car. These are the ones with the thick centre bar and which fit the later type front panel - any help much appreciated!

Sorry to say, the '62-64 grills/surrounds will NOT fit the later ('65-70) nose....

I asked the question on this thread - http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=148402
The upshot seemed to be that 62 onwards all grilles are interchangeable - have you tried this swap yourself Chris? I'd like to know for sure before buying grilles that won't fit the holes... |

Sorry it's taken me a few days to get back to you...
The thread you sited has both agreements and disagreements with them fitting. I side with Derek that they are different. See my attached photos. I had a late nose laying about and took some photos. The first photo show the extra ear for mounting the later grills. Yes, you might cut this off to get the '62-64 surrounds to fit. But if you look at photo #2 you will see a surround fitted into the hole of the later nose. It doesn't come out right. Yes, you could get the surround cut down a bit and might be able to get that to fit. But if you look at photo #3, there are no mounting hooks on the back bottom of the openning to hold the screen of the '62-64 assembly in place. If this were a '62-64 nose, there would be three sheet metal hook spot welded on the back side to hold the screen in place while a couple of screw came from to the top of the nose to provided upward tension on the upper end of the screen. Yes, I guess you could weld your own hooks on there to do this... I hope this clears it up for you.... Chris Last edited by agent_strangelove; May 3rd, 2012 at 16:12. |

Thanks Chris, that saves me a lot of hassle. I could have made the changes needed with a cut here and a weld there as required, but I painted the bare shell last weekend and have no intention of breaking out the mig now!
However, in the future when I get to my Amazon estate I may revisit this - at least I know what is involved now. If only those grilles weren't so darned good looking.... |
