S80 pre or post '06?
I'm thinking of buying an S80 D5. Cost wise I can afford something around 2005/06/07. I'm looking for something which is highly comfortable for long distance journeys, but also quiet and with a smooth ride.
Obviously the older ones have a larger boot, the newer ones have more sophisticated styling. Which is the best? |

I would choose the newer model for several reasons: newer, has nice extra features for log trips (cooled seats, active bending lights), also the looks is way better (but this is subjective). I don't know how big is the trunk of the older model, but the one in the post '06 model is not small at all! But I wouldn't buy a car from the first production year (regardless of maker or model).

I think the pre 06 models were far more stylish in many ways. Also if fuel economy is important, the 163bhp D5 is much better than later units. Unless you find a higher spec model, the differences in equipment are marginal. Certainly avoid anything pre 03.
The main rule of thumb with buying a car like this of this sort of age, is do not pay too much!

Post 06 for me.
I have just bought a 2007 S80 d5 se with winter pack. The car is superb only 39000 miles from a main dealer 8k. Drives like new. I have no dealings with the old S80 but when the new shape is SO cheap why would you get an old one? The drive is relaxed as I purchased the auto version and had it re mapped and a performance air filter in it. Goes like a train and has better fuel economy and the auto box changes quicker through the gears. Buy the new model if you can afford and put a private plate on it.

I'm curious - which of you gets the best mpg now, the 163bhp one or the D5 with remap?
