Default To buy or not to buy....that is the question!?

Hi Folks

I'm a complete newbie here but I was hoping to get some opinions/feedback on buying a Volvo S40 1.6 S. She who must be obeyed is in the market for a newer car and her only request was "its got to be safe". There were other requests regarding colours but.....

I'll be honest and say that although I know Volvo's have a fantastic safety record I hadn't considered buying one as I always considered them out of our price range....... until earlier today!! Just back from viewing a 59Reg, S40 1.6S with 35k on the clock. After a bit of chat we have established that we can have the car with 6 months tax, 1 yr MOT, full 101 point service and 2 year warranty for £6950. What do people think about this offer? Deal or no deal?

We are going back to test drive the car at the weekend. Is there anything that we should look out for during the test drive? Any common quirks?
Does anyone have anything to say about this entry level model? We both love the look of the car and we are hoping that the famed Volvo quality is a clincher.

Thanks in advance for your time!
Cheers
Jim S

Wrong place to post your question. This section is for the older S40 and V40 from 1996 to 2004.

Try posting here: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=58 which is the section for the newer S40.

Perhaps look at getting our generation of S/V40, they are much cheaper and also much more reliable

Having had three of the older (96-04) models and currently a new (04 onwards) model I have to agree with the reliability comment. Not had any major issues yet, just lots of niggly problems due to Volvo robbing the Ford parts bin on the newer Focus based car.
