I averaged 23mpg in that car (years ago). It had it's charm, but when mine switched itself off in the outside lane of the motorway and back on again after a couple of seconds, I got rid. It was a roughty -toughty engine - a bit angry and frustrated.

I think mine is noisy too but as it is the first D5 I've had not sure what normal is.
Mine seems to make slightly different noises at different times depending on rpm/acceleration/deceleration etc. Very different to other cars I've owned where the engine noise is consistent and usually the same type and maybe just gets faster/louder directly proportional to speed. This car seems different giving almost a short flurry of tappety noise occasionally but not always (kind of goes through a low rev band when pulling away then quietens down again (not sure if the noise is injectors/vacuum related or lifters and not sure if normal or not). Car sounds sweet from outside I think and these noises are more noticeable in the cabin for some reason - if I open the window I cannot hear the noise from outside if that makes sense? Pretty sure the other D5 I test drove before buying this one sounded the same though. |

Yes, I think you are right.
I half expected my first 5 cylinder Volvo to have some of the old Audi 5 cylinder warble, which it has a bit of higher up, but thrashy at low revs |

Lower speeds however the noise is nearer the agricultural/truck end of the scale. I think it sounds a little more refined at lower speeds when in sport mode but S mode gets on my nerves after a while as it hangs on to gears just that little bit too long for my liking. |
