Default Pre-tension spring cover pulled off!

Opened the boot earlier this morning, was icy and the pre-tension spring cover got frozen on and pulled off...see photo.
This happened to anyone else?

I have not lost a cover yet but do have issues with the rear doors, windows and tailgate freezing up, worse than any other car I have owned, the first time it happened it resulted in the rear door handle pulling away from door and would not return flush and required fixing in the dealers,
Now If doors are frozen up I do not pull on handle too hard and end up leaning in from the front and pushing door from inside.
I have used a silicone spray on the seals to try and prevent or lessen the freezing up.

Ours has suffered exactly the same and eventually one of the covers broke. Both struts have now been replaced by our dealer but no permanent solution.
