Default Xc90 rear brake woes

Hi go easy I'm new to this form stuff, so I've got an xc90 2005 and the old girl does me well but fails the mot every year on the rear hand brake efficiency. I've scoured the forum and I've learnt how to adjust them up with the barrel adjuster but this year I've gone for new shoes, now I can't get the rear discs back on. Can any one help? Tried to back off the adjuster but I can't get the inner part to retract, Anyone any clues as I can't find a section the says how to do this
Cheers all
Rich

Have you slackened off the cables?

Sorry I can't help you with the cable adjustment as I've not had to do mine yet, but I would expect it is reversal of tightening the cable. If the cable is too tight for the new shoes it wont let them sit squarely home thus the disc will not be able to be fitted

It's a barrel the you open up to take up the slack with a special tool but I can't get it to retract. Thanks anyway, hopefully some one who has don't it will be able to advise before I take the skin on all my knuckles ha ha

Think you might need to pull the cable at the backplate end whilst undoing the adjuster

I will try and sus this out it's annoying me now the adjuster is threaded but no amount of turning retracts it. Starting to wish I'd never started the job

From memory you need to hold one part still whilst turning the other but your right the Volvo instructions are a bit pants.

If you are taking about the adjuster down the passenger side gearbox tunnel, then there is a clip that needs to be removed, before the adjuster will retract..

Hi, I have attached a file I downloaded which helped me adjust the brake - it is a bit of trial and error, and I found I had to keep turning the screw part (part B in the diagram) until it became really lose and then I could push the cable in.
Attached Files
File Type: pdf Hand brake cable adjuster.pdf (424.2 KB, 33 views)
