2002 S40 erratic engine revs
Hi Guys
My fathers 1.6 2002 S40 has developed a strange problem where by the engine revs jump about for no reason, this is happening when idle and also apparently when moving which is a tad worrying, the rev couter will hit over 2000rpm then sink back down again? Any ideas before we head to Arnies in Aberdeen? Also this car has a hellish squeek from the back passenger side, more noticeable when under load! Andrew |

RE: 2002 S40 erratic engine revs
I have a 1999 S40 2.0T, automatic transmission, and when the engine is idle, or when the car is moving very slowly (accelerator not pressed), the revolutions (which is usually at 700 rpms in this condition) sometimes rises (up to about 1000 rpms), or lowers (down to about 500rpms), erratically and seemingly at random. I have never experienced any jump higher than 1000 rpms in this condition. My mechanic tells me that this is due to higher or lower engine loads, due to differing electrical requirements, at different times; and also that this is no cause for concern. Your 2000 rpms are rather high, though. You better have it looked at. And you might want to have your rear wheels, suspension and absorbers looked at too; no reason for hellish squeeks there!

RE: 2002 S40 erratic engine revs
I have had the same problem with the engine revs.
In my case it only happened when the A/C was switched on. The idle revs would increase to about 1000 rpm but when the outside temperature was high, in the high twenties eg on holiday in France, they would increase to 2500 rpm. The increase to 1000 rpm was cured by the dealer installing an updated dataset in the EMS. For the 2500 rpm they changed the throttle motor. I don't know if this cured the fault as it was changed just before winter when the fault did not happen and I got totally fed up with the car and traded it in for a diesel. I suggest you contact Volvo UK as I did and get the fault registered as I believe there should be a recall campaign. The situation of the engine increasing it's revs without warning is dangerous. To date Volvo have not given me an answer to my request for their intentions. My next move now is to report the fault to the DpT. |
