... putting these two together - the RB lies somewhere in the middle, but much closer to the orange car than the nasty brown car, so perhaps I'll advertise it on Car and Classic for £8,500 - a snip!!!

That would be fine until someone waved £8k in folding under your nose and you'd have to think about whther you really wanted to sell the RB Alan!

Absolutely Dave! I was not even considering tempting fate! I can't imagine the RB ever being offered for sale :-)

Default Common Sense Returns

We have often discussed cars at fantasy prices for cars in this column, but yesterday I noticed this car had sold for what I thought was something sensible:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-240...rdt=true&rt=nc

The seller tried the usual bollocks: 'time capsule car, wonderfully original' to pander to the classic car market, but at the end of the day it was just a cooking Volvo 240 GL Estate with 200,000 miles, a long MoT and 30 years of wear. It attracted just one bid at £1650, which I thought was a sensible price for a nice, but old car (I do so hope that was not a shill bid by the owner to get things going - that would be really daft).

:-)

Makes me wonder what my 1987 GLT would be worth: 164k miles, full leather interior, gauge pack, 2 previous owners, and a few minor niggles that a couple of days' work would resolve...

Obviously a shill bid of some sort Alan :

The link you gave immediately brought up "This item has been relisted" or words similar.

The number plate's almost the same as mine, as if issued 41 cars earlier. The condition is similar, perhaps a touch worse. I'm bound to agree with a price of more than £2000!

I'd just noticed an email from eBay telling me that Dave. Yes, I'd agree it was a shill bid by the seller. What a pity, my faith in common sense had been restored by at last seeing a reasonable car sell for what I thought was a sensible price, when all we have is the seller just trying to bump up the price.

Just out of curiosity I'll keep an eye on the relisted motor car. The fact it didn't sell at auction (if we discount the seller's shill bid against himself) then it rather confirms my view that most people selling 240s think their cars are worth much more than they will make because they don't sell at the inflated asking prices.

As a guide I'd say (from what I've seen things apparently sell for - not ridiculous asking prices):

a. Rough cars (anything with barn find in the title, cars needing welding to the sills or rear arches, MoT failures): make less than £1000.

b. Middling cars: 1981 and later cars with 100-200,000 miles, a bit of history (maybe the past decade, the stuff before that is just for interest), a long MoT and no obvious welding or repairs needed: make £1,500 to £3,000.

c. Very good cars: 1981 and later cars with less than 100,000 miles, full history, long MoT and in really good condition make £3,000 to £4,500.

d. Historic cars (1980 and older) will generally make 30-50% more than the above categories.

The above is just my observation of the market, it will not stop people hawking around rough cars for £3,000, mediocre cars for £6,000 or very good cars for silly money. I don't think they often achieve their asking prices and just spend months or years on the market until the owners give up.

:-)

PS. ...now this auction will test my theory about the price of rough cars:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1983-VOLV...MAAOSwc~JgZ2nE

... the seller seems really genuine and has been candid. I rather suspect the car isn't really worth saving, but the number plate might have a value (perhaps £500? - I'm not sure about the rules for transferring the plates from a SORN car, I have a vague recollection that cars have to be on the road for the plate to be moved, but I could easily be wrong).

I'll keep an eye on this one and report back with a sale price on Monday - my guess is £750 - maybe a grand if someone wants the plate).

:-)
