Default 1.8 GDI issue

Hi, i have a 2001 S40 1.8 GDI saloon. In January it was cutting out when cold, a local garage could find no fault code, so it went to a main Volvo dealer, who carried out a throttle body clean and this sorted out the issue. However after they said it was idling at 1700 rpm, and it needed to reset itself, they left the battery off over night and said it was sorted. But even now sometimes it still idles high after driving when i dip the clutch at a junction. This is usually resolved by flicking the accellerator pedal then it idles smooth.
Does anyone know what this could be, i spoke to volvo, and they said it could be the EGR valve sticking any ideas would be great.

Thanks

Darren

sounds to me like the throttle possiton sensor, either at the pedal end or the throttle body end could do with a clean

yours Doesnt have a throttle cable if i remember right ,its all electronic/fly by wire , so the pots at either end could possibly do with a clean with electrical contac cleaner ?

How long ago did volvo clean your throttle body?

Also what type of driver are you? If you drive like a nun, or like me..., then you will find out that the throttle body and other bits coke up quickly. If however you drive your car harder, like my gf does, then you will find out that the coking up is less common.

So if you cleaned your throttle body a few months ago and you are gentle with the accelarator pedal, then you will probably find out that the throttle body will need cleaning again.

You could also try an Italian tune up, as it will help clean up the junk in the engine

Sounds like throttle body, my previous car, also a GDI, did the same thing before the valve jammed and I had to have it towed home.

On the chance you need a replacement, I have a spare unit at home. Had it a few years but, seems ok.

Also, with a GDI, they run like crap for the first 100 miles after the battery has been disconnected...needs time to recalibrate.

I also 2nd the lead foot tune up, it can really work wonders.

Thanks for the replies. The throttle body was cleaned in January, and volvo just said it needs to learn its new position, but they said it should not take this long. I will take a look at the throtte sensor as it does not have a cable. I diddnt realise it could coke up so soon after a clean, is there anything i can do to help prevent it coking up?

Thanks

The throttle flap spindle can sieze on these , take the hose off and try and move it by hand with the ignition off . if its stiff you can dismantle it and clean and lubricate the shaft in it's bushes .
