740 GL steel wheels ... options ?
Hi all new here and new to volvo's in general,
I've aquired a volvo 740 estate (244'000 miles young)to enter in a rally in early december, the slight problem I am having at the moment is that it has been fitted with the 10 spoke 15" alloy wheels instead of the standard 14" steel wheels for which I have 6 rally MS tyres to suit. I have been trying to find some steel wheels locally but they seem to be a bit elusive (don't know why, 740's are pretty common) and I was wondering if a set of 14" steels will fit from another car ? ... I think ford used the 5x108 PCD on some of its cars ?? OR if anyone out there is breaking a 740 with steel wheels in the midlands/Lincolnshire area I would be interested in hearing from you. Thanks, Mike |

RE: 740 GL steel wheels ... options ?
IIRC the steel wheels used on 740s were mainly 15" rim size. I know that the early 240s used 14" steel rims. The offset is important it must be around 25mm (plus or minus a couple of mm), or the steering geometry is upset leading to prematurely worn tyres. You will also have to check that the wheel rims clear the callipers safely or change your tyres for 15" variety on 15" steel wheels. All the best, Peter |

RE: 740 GL steel wheels ... options ?
Early 740 had 14 inch steel wheels, unsure when they started with 15 inch but I know my father-in-law's 1988 740 GL had 14 inch wheels. Be aware that if the car has larger brake calipers aka turbo type, 14 inch will not fit.

it originally came with 14" steel wheels, so they should fit just fine.
Thanks for the advice ... the offset measurement is very usefull Mike |

so you've got the smaller 263x22mm brakes and not the 287x22mm ones

I think it started out life as a GL but now has all the extra's such as alloy wheels, leather seats , front spoiler (now up for grabs if someone wants one)
The brakes are the twin sliding piston type on the front. I've now got 6 x steels to put the tyres on so all should be well. Just started on the sump guard now ... 30mm box section and 3mm steel plate ... Mike |
