Default Wobbly Steering

My F reg 240 GLT 2.3 has been running fine, used a lot lately on dual carriageways one up at speed.

Yesterday had a day out to the forest with 3 dogs total 100 kilos in the boot and three adults on board. Whenever I braked at speed the steering wheel had a pronounced shake.

Today driving one up when braking the car drove fine no shaking on braking.

Any ideas what might cause the shaking? Tyre pressures all ok. Is there some sort of weight compensator on the rear brakes that may be faulty?

Rustee.

Have you tried having your wheels balanced? You may have lost a lead weight off one of them. Check that all your wheel nuts are tight as well. Hopefully this will be the cause.

I don't know how mechanicaly ambitious you are but it would be worthwhile jacking up the front of the car and checking that the ball joints have not collapsed. Check if there is more play with one wheel than the other.

Best of luck

Scott

Worth checking for play in the wishbone bush where it connects to the body.
