Default Thermostat part number

Does anyone happen to know the correct part number for the thermostat on a 2002 T5? I just drained my coolant and got the old one out only to find the one they sold me is much too big! The one I have is 271664. Really not happy as I don't want to refit the old one and use my new coolant as I will be emptying it out again to fit the proper one! I'm going to have to go on the scrounge for a car to borrow for work on monday now!

I will take the old one with me on monday so I can compare parts at the dealers but seeing as he put my reg into the computer last time I might stand a better chance if I can go in armed with the correct number.

Thanks

Should the thermostat have the part number stamped into it? The one they sold me has 271664 on the box and 9180811 stamped into the actual thermostat. Or does that number stand for something else?

The thermostat itself isnt available on its own , it comes as a kit with seal so hence a part number on the box .
I suspect you may have a thermostat cover with 3 screws and the cover is not horizontal ? The pre 2002 one has 2 screws and is horizontal . a VIN will help :-)

If you need to use the car just fill up the coolant then change the stat at a later date, when you remove the stat top cover you don't lose much coolant at all as long as the expansion cap is fitted nice and secure, no need to fully drain the coolant to change a stat - Mike

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of that. Do you mean the housing the thermostat sits in? Mine has 2 screws holding it in place, does that mean it's pre 2002? The car is early 2002 (51 plate) so it's quite likely the engine is 2001. I would get the vin but it is absolutely pouring with rain here now and I haven't got the new V5 back yet as I only just bought it! Plus I'm not that keen on posting the vin on a public forum. If the vin would help someone identify the correct part I will pm it.

Well I didn't drain it as such, I just did what you said but even that way it seemed to lose quite a lot. I have managed to sort out a car for work though so I can leave the Volvo until I can get the right part on monday.

as far as i can work out without the VIN if you have the 2 screw cover then 271664 is correct it is the 90 C thermostat , it should be about 55mm diameter and have the rubber ring fitted , the rubber is split in the centre , you tuck the thermostat into the groove in the rubber .

I mis-understood, I didn't realise you could check with the vin. It's stopped raining now so I will get the vin and pm you if that's ok?

Clan, I have sent you a PM with the VIN, if you could check I would be grateful. Here's a photo of the old and new parts. The one on the left is the part that was fitted, the large part has a diameter with the seal of about 40mm. The one on the right is the one the Volvo dealer sold me, the large part has a diameter with the seal of about 55mm.

well according to me you need 31293700 but what is confusing is that you say you have the angled housing ( 1a there which i agree with ) but only 2 screws hold the cover on where 3 are shown in the diagram .

Just been out and taken some more photo's. They're not perfectly focused but you get the idea. And that's the Mrs' nail polish, not mine!

The first one shows the angle of the top hose coming off the housing, then as you can see from the others there are only 2 bolts holding the housing in place.
